I am wondering if there is or will be a big slow down right for welders in Alberta. In southwest mb. It sounds like oil companies in mb. Will carry on till breakup than evaluate.Thankyou
Reply:There is no slow down for any major projects happening right now in Alberta. The Arabs are just flooding the market right now to drive the price down so they can potentially take more of the market over (they hope). The Alberta oil is higher cost oil to produce. The problem for the Arabs is the lower cost of oil also hurts their pocket books. It will rebound.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:You will see large projects postponed or the completion date extended but the oil industry will keep plodding along.  A young guy not 20 years old came to visit me in the 1970's.  he was working for Haliburton and had lost count of gas wells they had fracked and proofed the flow before capping.  The gas wells were like piggy banks.  Some oil fields have lasted over 100 years.  They don't stop, they just slow down.  When the price is up they suck out more.  When the price drops they turn the pumps down and just pay for overhead.   I can remember a massive pull back in 1980 where almost every rig went into storage or was shipped below the 49th.  There were massive layoffs.  In a couple of years it started to come back.  Welders who forget the fable of the ant and the grasshopper are the ones who lose.  The ones who think like an ant and plan for slow downs in work survive.  The only thing that you can be sure about with any job you have is that one day you will be laid off.
Reply:Lotech, your last sentence reminded me of what a fellow I worked w/ mining: "always remember the day a mine starts up it's working to put itself out of business".                                                                  MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
