Ad in local Craigslist has a couple of old anvils for sale. Both appear to have damaged horns and are well used.  Are they worth anything?http://huntsville.craigslist.org/tls/4802729940.htmlGraysOrnamentalIron.com

Reply:Both look like old Arm and Hammer anvils. A&H isn't the greatest anvil in the world, but not the worst either. They don't say how heavy they are, so it's tough to say  on price. $2-3  per pound is typically a decent price for a working anvil. Those are both worn, but still quite useable. If they were say in the 100 lb range or better, I wouldn't hesitate to grab both of them at that price, even in the condition they are in. I know I could find someone who would want one as a starter anvil. Even if they were smaller, that's not a bad price. You can go over to Iforgeiron and read up on A&H anvils. I know there have been several threads there on those anvils..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I wouldn't give over $50 for the best of the anvils. About the only parts worth having are the heel and the hardy and pritchel holes...better to save your money and invest it in an anvil in better shape.
Reply:My anvil has the similiar marking but says Vulcan. I got mine from a high school . Instructor for metal shop said Vulcan was used in many schools. Those edges are really beat .
Reply:I don't really need one, just didn't want to pass them up if they were a good deal.GraysOrnamentalIron.com
Reply:Assuming those are 100+lbs, even in lousy shape you could likely double your money overnight in this area (northwest).  Bigger anvils are tough to come by up here so go for a premium.  At a recent auction I saw a 250# mediocre brand in moderate shape go for well over a grand.Farrier anvils are common but we just don't see a lot of blacksmith anvils come up.  I don't know squat about the area they are in but I'd jump on them in a second if they showed up here, warts and all.
Reply:Vulcan cast iron anvil. Can sort of be patched up with MIG wire.$50 each, polish them up a bit and resell for $125. $10 each for the tongs.
