Reply:What type of projects? If you have access to 240v then stepping up to a Lincoln 180 or  Hobart 187 gets you twice the machine for just a little more cash and your range of "projects" really improvesIf you you only have 120v then I would suggest the HD3200 @ Home depot or a HH140 http://www2.northerntool.com/product/200306073.htmthey come with a regulator so all you have to do is get a Bottle of Shielding gas  to use Solid wireThe 100hd requires an additional kit, which is about a 100 bux.Where are you located?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:that was my first welder had it at least 15 years and still use it
Reply:looks okay to me. we used lincoln welders where i worked at only the 460v 3 phase models  for smaller jobs that one should be okay. i would upgrade it to MIG right away though for cleaner looking welds.
Reply:just want to learn how to weld

Reply:I believe the 180 comes with the gas kit. That machine will be okay for a starter just understand it has limitations. If you have the capability you are much better off with the 220v model. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:i do not have access to a 220v plug and i do not mind making more then one pass i just want to learn and i understand that i will eventually want to buy a 220v machine
Reply:There are often ways around the 220v plug problem if you think about it. Electric dryers use 220v and many make an extension cord so they can plug in to that. I ran a 220v mig in several apartments by using the dryer or range outlet, or adding a dedicated line. Its not as imoposible as many believe. It's not just about making more than one pass. It's about making good passes, and for multiple passes, every one of them must be good in order for it to work, and you have to know how to prep to do this. You need to bevel corectly and the proper amount, not just pile on lots of wire and think that works. With FC you need to remove ALL the flux before you make the next pass or you will have slag burried in the weld. A failure waiting to happen. A big problem with these small machines is that the welds look good, but have very little penetration. A great example of this is these threads on the shop press. The OP thought he did everything right but the welds have no strength as many of us pointed out. Not picking on him, thats how we learn, and its a great example of over streching the limits of small machines.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ighlight=presshttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ighlight=pressThink about taking a class at a local CC or votec school. You will learn the right way to weld and save your self alot of time money and frustration.Good luck.Last edited by DSW; 07-29-2008 at 08:06 PM.

Reply:I can understand the money thing, I just went thru it getting my Tig machine. I would have loved to have gotten a bigger machine but just couldn't afford the one I wanted. I did however wait till I had started my tig class and talked to the instructor about several machines I was looking at and spent some extra money to get a good machine rther than  cheap one. I have been down the " buy the 110v mig then replace it" road when I found that it wasn't powerful enough to do the things I started to build. Then turned around and bought a bigger machine. I wished I had spent he extra money the first time. It's tough to understand what a machine can and can not do when when you are just learning. It's also hard when you don't know what you want to build. And you WILL find more and more things that you will want to do once you start to weld.I would rather see you wait a couple of months, then get say the Hobart HH187 then spend $400 now and then need to spend the $650 or so for the hobart in 6 months or a year after you find the small machine limits what you can build. Just trying to say you the trouble I went thru.Whatever you decide wlding is a great hobby and can become a good career if you choose. Good luck with your class. Take advantage of the instructors knolege and show that him that you have a serious interst and you sould do fine.
Reply:so i ordered the Hobart Handler 140 MIG Welder from northeren toolwhat kind of metal should i learn to weld on what kind of face sheild
Reply:Looks a bit strange to me. It says 140A - so what kind of breaker is required? From other hands it gives 20% at 90A, so what kind of duty cycle at 140A? My 180T gives 60% at 180A...

Reply:so how thick of material should i practice welding on
Reply:Practice on the grey matter. Try a lot of reading. You mention Northern Tool, have a look at the instructional video's they sell. I have some from Wall Mountain.Video'sWelding is easier to learn on top equipment, such as you might find in school. Having your own machine to practice with is good, but you really get what you pay for.City of L.A. Reply:what should i use to prep the metal before i weld it1/8 would be best and flap disks on the mini grinder to prep your material. regular grinding disks will do as well. After you start welding some coupons, cut them apart and look at the penetration., Post pic's then.Good luck and have fun.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:like a die grinder or a open toe grinderdoes welding with a flux core wire leave slag that you have to grind offstill waiting for my welder should be here any day now
