are they any good home depot has the 350 on sale for $36.00 every where else there $70.00
Reply:They work.  I went with the 750 because I wanted to sharpen 3/4" bits.  Worth 36 bucks if it sharpen the size bits you use most.  I got mine for a specific job, otherwise I don't use it much.  I need somethings that sharpens bits larger than 3/4".
Reply:We've had 2 here at work and no one ever uses them.  If you can learn to sharpen your bits on a bench grinder or belt sander you'd be better off.  I know I can get a bit sharper by hand.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:I like them, and they are worth the $40 they cost. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Originally Posted by rlitmanReally? I'm impressed.  I've been sharpening bits on a belt sander (I get better results than on the grinder), for a long time, but have never been able to get a bit as symmetric as from my drill doctor.  That tends to be important when I'm drilling on the lathe, and want the bit not to veer to one side.  Also important, when I want to drill through the side of a round bar, on the drill press.I've found that on first contact, the bits sharpened with the drill doctor (or factory sharpened), "walk" just a little bit less than ones I've hand sharpened, although once the point is in, and they're drilling at their full diameter, the difference is hard to tell, so yes, I can get them as sharp, but I like the drill doctor results more.In addition, most of my bits are cobalt, and have split points, which I really like, and I can't grind a split by hand.Keep in mind that the cheapest ones do not split points, and the next cheapest have an almost useless splitting mechanism.  That, and there is a high learning curve to these.  They're pretty easy to use, but watching the video is a must IMHO.
Reply:With the DD you're stuck with the same angle which isn't bad but depending on what your drilling (thick or thin material) you can put a different angle and different relief on the bit to make it drill faster.  The more relief the faster it'll cut but the trade off is the bit won't hold it's edge as long.  If you're drilling thin or soft material it's worth the trade off.  I don't have a problem with bits walking as long as the bit is centered, we drill lots of all-thread and pipe.  I do like the DD for sharpening tungsten though.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Drill Doctor = godsendGet the heavy duty one. Home Depot doesn't sell it. But I think you can pick it up off ebay for $130. I forget the model name but it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. (okay maybe not quite like that but it's good  )Miller Syncrowave 180SDMillermatic 175

Reply:I've been using a DD for years and love it.  Mine does split point.  If I were to purchase another I would get one that could do 135 bits.  They are great machines.Contemporary Metal Wall Art and Abstract Metal Art
Reply:I have the better one that does up to 3/4 inch, does the split point and at least two angles. I think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The amount of money I have saved with the DD is well worth the price of it.I don't think I could live with out it now.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Originally Posted by Sandy And which model would that be?  Admittedly I'm rough as heck on bits and I don't pretend it's the bit's fault or the drill motor. Operator error all the way. I can destroy a cobalt bit in three holes or less. I've been passively looking at something like a DD for quite awhile. Bought one off brand cheapo a long time ago that isn't worth a hoot. I don't keep a grinder wheel straight enough to do a bit justice.

Reply:Thanks guys. It's on my wish list. If I print out a colored copy, carry it around with me with that long sad stare for about a week,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the lil' woman will give me that frown like they do then go get it.
Reply:I have a Drill Doctore XPK and I love it.I for one do not have the skill to sharpen bits by hand and this does exactly what I want.Worth it's money in my opinion.
Reply:Had to get one.  I sharpen a bit with a grinder, and the doggone thing is 1 inch long before I can get the point right. Got the one that goes to 3/4.  Anything bigger, I use annular cutters.BTW    Morris Taper, and R8 arbors for annular cutters are becoming pretty widely available.  It turned my 3/4 horse drill press into a HOLE HAWG  It's a really good idea to set your press up for flood coolant if you're gonna use annular cutters on it.
