I was told about a Tig cup that had a stainless ring at the mouth of the cup. Was told it was for walking the cup and help alot when doing so on Carbon.  Was wondering if anyone knew about these?  Knew if you can still get them?  One of the Older Guys in my shop said he wished he still had his, and that he really liked them, so was trying to see if it was possible to find one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Mark
Reply:I have never seen a tig cup with a metal ring. Maybe the metal ring was an add on thing for the cups?

Reply:Learn to do in correctly and you won't need a "Stainless Ring?" around the end of the cup.I am thinking all that would do is screw up the arc....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I wonder if the old timer was just pulling his leg? I also agree that it would mess with thew arc. I also agree with learn how to weld the right way.
Reply:Why can't you walk the cup with a regular ceramic gas cup?

Reply:@ LINDE- Bill.Did those metal shield cups ever allow the arc to ground to it? I think that could be a problem for cup walkers.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:yeah I was thinking the same thing......Unless you kept a tight gap it seems the arc would jump to ground through the cup?  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:About 7yrs ago I was working in a ironshop for a while and they only had one other guy that tigged, so they set me right up with a machine and a cabinet full of tig supplies. There was about 50 of those cups in the cabinet and I asked my boss what the heck they were for and his answer was that he used to use those when he was a tig welder for Proctor and Gamble. He said they were for taking extreme heat doing long run after runs. He said they built all the stainless vats for Ronzoni.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I was curious about this b/c i had never heard of it either.  Figured maybe someone would know.  We were welding on a 22" pipe at the time of the discussion, and his cup kept slipping or something or another, and thats when he told me about them.  He said that the metal on the cup made it easier to walk on carbon, and never once mentioned that it effected his arc at all.  Thank you for the pic i will show it to him and see if by chance those are what he was referring to.As for the comments of learning to weld, i do know how and was simply curious as to see about it, as i had never heard of it, and neither had a lot of other welders i had talked to.  Going on 12 years of welding between Military and Civilian life. Thanks for all the help.
Reply:I do not believe it was an add on. or atleas... HE didnt believe it was as i did ask about that.I can walk a regular Ceramic cup as can he.  I think it was just one of the Good Ol Days conversations and he peaked my interest with it.  As he was talking about a place that he worked at before where they welded a bunch of pipe for Lube oil systems and such. Said that was the only place he had ever used them at and he had never seen them again.  Even said that, that company hadnt been able to find them to order them again either so he thought they just quit selling/making them.  So i told him i would give it a shot and see if anyone knew anything.
Reply:This is all news to me. I have never seen one of those and am curious like the others about them arcing out if they are grounded to the work?learn something new every day.
Reply:The ceramic is the insulator so it wont ground, and the steel is there to protect the ceramic from being brittle and breaking very easy when under extreme heat for long periods of time. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I think the only time that might cause problems is the initial arc start. During that time, if you had that cup grounded, it might try to start the arc from the electrode to the cup metal depending on how far away your electrode was from the work piece. Once you have the arc started though, it wouldn't try to jump. Once the arc is established, the voltage from the electrode to the work piece is very low since the argon or helium is ionized. Because of that, the voltages present shouldn't be anywhere near high enough to jump the gap from the electrode to the cup UNLESS you get the ionization/plasma cloud close to that metal.
Reply:i want some of these pretty cool
Reply:Yes it does sound interesting.  If these are what he was talking about, i am sure we may be looking into ordering a couple.
