Hey guys. Ive been a lurker here for a while, and I thoroughly enjoy gawking at everyones beautiful welding projects. I finally have one of my own and I figured I would share even though compared to everything I see on here its very simple. My buddy asked me if I could weld up a beer brewing stand for him, so of course jumping at any chance to weld I said "OF COURSE!." Ive been welding for a while, but this is my first decently large project completely from scratch. I only have a couple of pictures for now, but I will get more once its complete this upcoming week. Also how do my welds look? Be gentle, haha. Attached Images
Reply:I like it! Not experienced enough to comment on welds, but I'd be proud of them if they were mine.
Reply:Thanks Tom!
Reply:Brutis 10 design Nice stand!!  How about some plates to cover the holes in the upright tubing would make it look 100% better in my opinion. Grind those top welds down and cut a plate to fit the corners. If you do another one miter them easier from  the start.  Welds look good to me.I see you are going to use the lower rear as a gas tube sticking to the original design. I did the same thing and found that propane tight welds are tough to make without sealing it up and AIR pressure testing it. I had to cut mine apart and reweld. Tubes were leaking into other tubes inside the stand it was a big mistake on my part. pressure test it now.Last edited by worm122; 08-02-2013 at 11:05 AM.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers

Reply:I am in to brewing and had the same thing in mind. Keep up the good work and the ideas and pictures coming.

Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveAs a fairly new welder, why do you think it's a good idea to weld a gas tight system for propane?A couple pieces of black iron pipe, some t fittings and elbows and it's done safely and correctly.  Clamp it to the frame and be done.Cool project, just fix the safety issue and use screwed together pipe and fittings.Dave J.

Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveNot correct.  Your welding is on the hook for life.  How long until you stop thinking about it?Burns are forever.  When I worked with propane we had constant safety training on what happens when something breaks.Dave J.
Reply:don't even waste your breath, just get the fittings and do it right. It's not something that you should weld. end of discussion. I'm not trying to be rude, but you don't have the skills, if you did, you wouldn't have to ask about it, and you'd know better. and like it's been said, your welds are always on the hook. Metal expands and contracts under preasure, and heat. These cycles will cause fatigue in the weld over time and could eventually leak even if it doesn't do it right away. better to have the pipe maker on the hook than yourself.I have a buddy who started a brewery and they had their brew house made professionally. All the gas lines are their own lines. clamped to the frame. If the professionals do it that way, don't you think that the hobbiests should too?Last edited by ThorsHammer; 08-02-2013 at 03:14 PM.There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:@ ThorsHammer - SpotOn.  Have a modified "Brutus Ten" HERMS (Heat Exchanged Recirculating Mash System) design in the worx.  Not planning to use the structure to transport (flow) the propane.  That's sketchy.  Avoid the PV = nRT fight.  Gun'a run some SS wire braid reinforced hose (FC321-04 Aeroquip LPG) to the three burners and kit her out with Aeroquip panache. Expensive route, but solid n safe.@ - Threadkiller - Nice weld work.  Jam to HomeBrewTalk.com for examples of builders incorporating SS lines in their rigs.Last edited by ManoKai; 08-02-2013 at 10:33 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Fellow home brewer here.  I do recall the original Brutus 10 plans calling for the gas manifold to be part of the frame.  I always wondered about that part.  Great points above.  Can always weld on mounting tabs for black or galvie pipe for the gas.  Safer.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:corner welds leak into corner welds filling up other beams. Air tight welds are not easy you are not dealing with air you are dealing with flammable gas.Put a air gauge in one of the holes and a air nipple with a shut of valve on another pressurize it to 100 or so psi let her sit over night and that needle should be rock solid.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers

Reply:to a point, most gas lines are run at like 4PSI and are tested at like 10 PSI. THe brewery I know tested theirs at 30 PSI. testing a system at 100PSI is not only unneccisary, but down right dangerous. like I said, I know people that started a brewery. black pipe, threaded fittings, no muss, no fuss. and way less dangerous. There are no problems. Reply:OK I get safety I try to be as safe as possible what is really going to happen to a weld on 1/8 inch tubing. Catastrophic failure it not going to explode, the weld is gonna let go and the air will leak out. I agree that 100 PSI is not necessary  but I did it on mine. The beam does not have a constant supply of air. A cubic foot or so that is in the tube poses very little threat . I think you are beating the safety drum for the fun of it.Last edited by worm122; 08-06-2013 at 08:46 PM.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
