Hey   New to welding. what do you use to clean and keep up your welding table top? Any special cleaners or methods to keep it up?thanksSorry if a stupid ?
Reply:Cllean the spatter and tacks off with an angle grinder.  Hold the disc as flat as possible to the table to avoid putting gouges in the surface.
Reply:thanks man. i heard that you have to oil it, this correct?
Reply:?????  oil contaminates welds and reduces conductivity between the work and the table.    I guess you could oil it if you are putting it out inthe rain.
Reply:thanks thats what i read but a (stupid) buddy of mine said you have to oil it.i thought he was wrong.thanks

Reply:thnaks man ill check it out.
Reply:I built my welding table over a year ago and all I do is sometimes sand off the spatter with a disc sander and thats it.  I have never done anything to the top and it has never even rusted.I believe there is some coating from the steel plant that helps prevent rusting.  I would not sand the top shinny, just leave it the dark color.
Reply:thanks bro.  ill try that.thats what i figured on doing.thanks
Reply:If your not going to be using you table for awhile spray it with anti-spatter, this will coat and prevent rust and not affect when you do weld on the table again. It will also wipe of with a little Thinner or acetone. Just my .02.
Reply:I'm building a table using a 5/8" top.  The plate was scrap, so it's rusty and a little pitted.I've nocked all the major rust off but will take it down to bare metal before it's finished. Is a light coating of anti-spatter deemed the best rust-preventative?  I plan to use the table for a variety of chores and hobby projects, so I want to avoid anything oily if possible. Thanks!
Reply:I have a 'coolie hat' stone on an old 7" craftsman grinder that I use only for my welding table. My table top is also a scrap yard find which took, I dont know, a while, time seemed to have stopped, cleaning the rust/scale off with that stone, but it came out nice, alright, alright.-c-What is the sound of one knee jerking?
Reply:One of the handiest tools I've got for keeping the table top cleaned of fine spatter is a 4" wide chisel.   I ran it against the belt sander to get rid of the original chisel point until I had around an 1/8 flat on the end with two square edges.   It also works great for removing spatter and slag from what you're working on.   The square corners are great for raking down the toe of a weld.   Since stealing this idea off of another guy I hardly ever get my regular chipping hammer out.   In fact next to my Welpers it's probably the most used hand tool in my box.
