Hi, we repair bearing housings for construction equipment mostly made of cast steel.   Hard as hell to machine the ID when MIG'd with regular ER70S-6, usually have to get out the Dumore.  I want to take the plunge a get a  lifetime supply of Nickel wire and a dedicated 98/2 Ar/O2 tank.  The question is,  A guy on ebay has a 33lb roll of Nickel 61 for 400 bucks.  Specs says it is good for overlaying steel so I think I am good, but is the Nickel 55 better all around?  I want to get the right wire so I can do cast steel and cast iron and have it be very machinable.  Thanks-Dave from CT
Reply:Wouldn't regular mig or 7018 be better if in fact it was cast steel? If its hard to machine, maybe there are softer wires like the "easy grind" they were talking about for auto body welding.
Reply:I am going to surmise the the carbon content of the wire and fast freeze of the mig process is hardening the weld. I think you are on the right track with the Nickel-61, but you may achieve similar results with 309L. It's low carbon content will resist hardening on fast freeze and will resist inter-granular corrosion in contact with the cast steel. You could test the theory  of hardening with some 308L if you have some. In addition, I do use Allstate easygrind wire on low stress mig welding including low carbon steels. My favorite application is repairing of holes with stripped or crossed threads that the customer killified in HRS or CRS. Filling with Er70-s2 leaves a very tough hole to drill and tap. The EasyGrind wire leaves a weld similar to the base metal in hardness. I also use it a lot for freehand tacking of steel components that will be adjusted later. It does not snap like 70-s2. Weldingsupply.com has it in .030 diameter if you are interested for a look.https://weldingsupply.com/cgi-bin/ei...F:OR:terms::PC"130TF44 Spoolarc Easy Grind 030" 11Lb Sp $5.98 17% Off Details $54.89 11/LB"($4.99 LB )Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Thanks fellas, I consider the ER70S-6 my regular MIG wire, it certainly is freeze hardening, even with mega pre-heat.  It doesnt take much to make boring out cast steel a PITA!  We dont blanket it either, like to keep it spinning in the lathe..Great idea on the 309L, I think I will try that because I wanted to set the MIG up for SS also, and this will do double duty.  With 98/2 Ar/O2 it will work for the Nickel too if I have to go that route.Only problem is getting good beads on thinner short circuit stainless with the 98/2 Ar/O2??Dave
Reply:I would think you could use standard C25 (argon/CO2)  gas since corrosion is not your main concern
