Helped some people who were moving out of town. Saw an old vise in the barn, thought it would be a nice addition to my welding table that I am going to build someday. They said I could have it. Now I am just trying to figure out what I got. Anyone know anything about this vise? I was looking online at new Wilton brand vises, but I could not find one exactly like what I have. Some of them have a hefty price tag associated with them. As you can see, it is a Wilton brand....From the general shape of it, it might be a Machinist vise. The jaws are only 3.5 inches wideThe max opening distance between jaws is 5.5 inches,,,It appears to be a swivel base, but has nuts, not thumb screws to hold it in place. Maybe these nuts were added later? Seems strange to have them.....Qualified & experienced at welding scrap metal
Reply:Yes, It is a machinist vise and it is worth about $250.00 used all day long. Nice score.
Reply:They are insanely expensive these days.  Do not beat the crap out of it, weld on it, etc.  Great vise."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Thanks for the information, guys...... After looking around on the Web, I decided to clean the vise up a little to see if I could locate a model number. It's a 935. Here is what vise looks like with just a little work. There is some rust, but nothing that prevents vise from working very smoothly... even the slide bar moves smoothly.I assume I can use emry cloth to clean this rust off, or is there an easier way?Qualified & experienced at welding scrap metal

Reply:Best rust removal I can suggest is this:  http://www.evaporust.com/The instructions will tell you to soak the item, needless to say you would need a lot to do a vise.  I have been told you can soak rags in the stuff then lay the rags over the item you want to de-rust then wrap the whole shebang in a plastic bag to minimize evaporation. The stuff I have done has been soaked, great stuff to work with, no nasty smell, no gloves needed, biodegradable (but it actually works despite this).  Oh and its re-usable.Chris.

Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauThat would be the way to go. That way you can remove or install it as needed. Here is what I did with mine. It can be mounted on any of the 4 corners. Having these under the table makes it so you can also mount other items to be used, too, and you can use them in the receiver hitch on your truck if you have one. I have 2 bench vises, a pipe vise, and a shelf for my chop saw, mounted this way. The one for the chop saw is made so the deck on the chop saw is level with the table top to support the material being cut.

My original idea was to mount this vise to a removable arm that will attach to the welding table that I am going to build someday. Now, I think I will swap this vise with the super large vise I have mounted to a stationary workbench.  I figure whatever vise is attached to the welding table will be beat on, welded on, and just no telling what. The Wilton vise is just too nice to be abused. You can tell from using it, that it is a quality vise.
