I need to get this thing on the ground (safely) so I can fix it. Its about 65 ft long.  I'm fairly sure it's too heavy for the bobcat and my forklift is immobile due to where it's parked and all the rain we've had lately.   I do have enough tubing for an A frame and a chain hoist.  Other than that I'm stumped.Any ideas? Reply:In my old shop I had an 1 inch bar that was bent and concreted in to form an anchor.  It was used for straightening frames and other work that needed an immovable anchor point.  If you had something like that you could easily come-a-long then unit back straight and then repair as if it was on the ground.other than that I would use a chain fall from a sky hook to lower it   if you don't have a sky hook, then use a anchor point above the unit like the ceiling joists in your barn/shop or overhead A-frame.
Reply:My auger is 8"x60'. I assembled it in my shop and raised it with my bobcat (S205). If your skid steer is really small, could you drive the auger partway into a large door and lower the auger with block and tackle or winch?Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:Could it be repaired if you just got the pressure off the support wires and the running gear?Possibly use a stack of pallets with some heavier cribbing. Strap the pallets together solid. Place tall stack under the upper end. Use floor jack to raise the bottom a couple inches and then insert cribbing somewhere above the repair on the lower end. Sounds like an idea, practical application might need some tweaking!
Reply:Maybe they should put bigger stickers on there showing the kink point seen more than one like that seen guys set them on roofs or on big tree limbsMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Yep, I got a kick out of that.  I believe the sticker in the pic warns of kinking.  This one actually got run into by a hired hand pulling a spreader. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Is it possible to cut it off at the kink, insert a sleeve and then weld that in?  Then just raise the small end with the Bobcat and weld it to the sleeve.  Reinforce with some sort of outer sleeve if needed?
Reply:what is the job budget like?  Lot's of places rent equipment that could lift that.   You know anyone with a decent size wrecker?  Might cost a few bills but sometimes that's just the cost of the job.
Reply:The weight is very minimal. Its just clumsy. Pickit up with the skid steer just enough to unhook the long braces and then set it down on the axle to work on it.  Mac
Reply:Couldn't the bottom be temporary welded a little higher up so the bottom could be cut off and repairedMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Level it out as is and setup scaffold below kink. Use bobcat for removal of damaged section. you may have to separate at flanges too where there may be a splice for auger. May want to ask owner if he wants to replace all of the flighting depending on wear.I would call manufacture and explain situation. They may be able to tell you where the splice is in flighting saving you some work and suggest some helpful tips.
Reply:The auger splice will be very close to where the tube sections bolt together. Taking it apart at that point presents some interesting challenges if you decide not to lay it on the ground.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:Twas me, I'd just get a front end loader (100hp tractor sized), chain up the undamaged end near the break/kink with the chain looped over the top of the tube and the bucket underneath, hold the position, cut the auger tube like a hinge if you think you can replace the kinked part, then put down pressure on the loader to straighten the whole mess out (because you left a hinge) and line it up.Flighting is probably toast I'd imagine, dunnoTook a look at the Butler web site, and the tubing is fabbed out of 12ga it seems.  Could get a repair sleeve rolled at any good fab shop."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Anyways, that's how I'd maybe try it Jim()"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Update....I had the customer bring in his forklift to drop it onto sawhorses.  I ended up cutting out a bit over a foot and then welding it back together with some reinforcing plates.  I'm waiting for a few parts to finish it up.I attempted to lift it off the sawhorses with my little bobcat.  It wasn't happening... Reply:Nice repair. How much of the flighting needed to be replaced ???   That had to take some time, you did awesome.  I'll bring mine over if it happens.
Reply:Just over a foot was removed.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Very well done repair!! I like how you put the plates on as well.
