I have a job to do tomorrow, Sunday. There isn't a welding shop open in town. I bought 10lbs of 5356 filler to tig weld two brackets. I opened the box this afternoon and its 1/8" not 1/16".....One bracket is 1/8 thick aluminum, the other is 7/16" round bar. I'm using a Danasty 200. I'm new to aluminum but have a fair amount of experience with stainless and mild steel. I tried to weld with this rod today and its about what I expected, way to thick. Any advice on what to do?
Reply:Some lowes or Home Depot carry 1 lb spools of 035 wire. You can twist a few strands to make it thicker.

Reply:Bummer. I would have suggested 3/32" diameter, but I think I would be able to use 1/8th in a pinch. You will have to melt the puddle larger before chilling it with the filler. Up your cup size and gas flow.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Grab a clean hammer and hammer it flat. It will require less heat to get it to melt. Works in a pinch. Just make sure hammer and surface it's on for flattening are clean as it will totally contaminate the rod |
