What do you guys recommend for a grinder wheel for tungsten ???
Reply:I watched a pipe welder use his 4 1/2" grinder with a tiger's paw (flap disk) to sharpen his tungsten. So that's what I do."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Another member had posted this a while ago. It is the replacement diamond wheel for the harbor freight circular saw sharpener installed on a bench grinder.http://www.harborfreight.com/replace...ner-98862.htmlI just bolted it up against the existing grinding wheel. It works well, best part is there is no mess.I looked briefly but could not find his posting.
Reply:I made an adaptor for my 6" bench grinder to hold 4.5" discs.  For nowI have a flap disc on it until I find the diamond wheel amongst the mess in my shop.Airco Heliweld II AC/DC HomeMade Wire FeederLincoln 255PLincoln HD130Everlast PP804x8 CNC TableWelding helps me build my hobbies and takes up time on the side.
Reply:My hand held tungsten grinder from arc zone uses a diamond wheel, and after 4 years of use, its still going strong on the same wheel.
Reply:I made this recently:Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:Nice solution Jon.Has anybody ever tried this Diamond Grinding Wheel Set from HF with a Dremel tool for grinding tungsten? It is also just $10 and wouldn't need any custom arbors or spaces that I can't make since I don't own a lathe Bill
Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=51451&page=2Old thread about this topic.  I posted how I mounted the diamond wheel from Horrible Fright along side the regular stone.  It worked OK until I got the adapter made.It is also just $10 and wouldn't need any custom arbors or spaces that I can't make since I don't own a lathe
Reply:Isn't 100-180 grit a little course for small tungsten? I use .040/etc, and that would tear them up pretty damn quick. I wish I could find an 800 grit diamond wheel like that for the same (rough) price...Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons
Reply:For what it takes a machine shop should be able to do it in under 10-15min.  That's what mine took. A scrap peice of 2" aluminum round stock, 1/2" drill bit and a few passes on my small Smithy lathe.  Done.I would assume a shop would charge you 20.00 cash.Airco Heliweld II AC/DC HomeMade Wire FeederLincoln 255PLincoln HD130Everlast PP804x8 CNC TableWelding helps me build my hobbies and takes up time on the side.
Reply:Just to add this is the HF tool that the diamond blade used in Jon K post is sold for. I made my tungsten grinder using the whole tool, no access to a lath to make an arbor, thought I'd show  another way of doing the same. Magazines have issues, everything else has problems
Reply:I buy the 3" roloc discs for my hand held angle grinder in 100 grit. They work great ansd quick and at 1.00 a piece the price is right. Starting a point they don't last long but dressing a point they last for ever and the finish is nice and smooth.
Reply:I will agree that a diamond wheel would be the best for tung grinding.I just use my gray stone bench grinder, same one I used for steel, aluminum, chromoly, stainless, plastic, rubber, wood, whatever I need to grind.

Reply:I bought a diamond wheel for my angle grinder. It's 4.5". I think these wheels are actually used to polish concrete. It's called a continuous diamond cup wheel.I'm just a beginning tig welder but it seems to work very well. It only takes a few seconds to grind a tip on a 1/16" tungsten or to cut of the tungsten. I grind a bunch at both ends and then just replace the tungsten or swap it when I manage to contaminate it. Which happens a lot... Attached ImagesLast edited by Pete.S.; 05-09-2013 at 01:01 PM.
