It seems I might be getting a new account with a gun builder........I was wondering what filler the gun guys are using on most gun welds? Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:Tartan TIG from Rockmount research is supposed to be the only rod that accepts bluing. I did a 5# order over on the SFT board a year or so ago and it was $120, which I split between some of the members. I bought it for a repair on a Colt SA, which I have not done yet, but have used it on several other gun repairs for a local smith, who has no complained. It is a lot of money if you only need one rod. If so shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can spare a rod or two. Otherwise you can order it from Rockmount at http://www.weldit.com/

Reply:Depends on the part, internal parts that I'm doing buildup on ER70. External parts that might need to be blued, appropriate for the steel welding. The problem with bluing welded areas is hot salts react to hardness differently. You have to use some careful techniques to get even bluing on welded parts. Slow rust bluing works a fair bit better for even finishes on welded parts. Stainless, pretty much any will work fine. Numerous gunsmiths over the years have welded with coat hangers when they wanted some good hard welds. |
