Hi all,I have a small hobbiest garage shop, and recently acquired a used Miller Maxstar 200 welder. The shop who gave it to me was uncertain if it worked, but they had been using it for a resistive heater-not even welding. So at no cost to me, I had the machine. I've purchased a torch, pedal, and acquired the other goodies to have a nice little stick/TIG unit. It seemed to have some welding power when I tested it-burned into a piece of scrap metal. Now I've got the other parts together, and am not having any success. At all amperages, it just sputters out and does not make any heat to speak of. I don't get any other lights than the blue power light. A hum/buzz comes from the inside, which slowly dies out after power is turned off. I am getting some power, just not enough. See my welding attempt pictures. This is with the TIG torch, 1/8" electrodes, at various amperages and the DIG setting at different levels. No effect. The pedal doesn't seem to make any effect when in TIG mode. My tungsten glows very bright as the arc is started, but no sustainable arc will form, and the tungsten/filler just stick. I am a decent welder, so what could the machine be doing?Facts:-Machine STR type (no LCD readout, if that makes a difference)-The SN of machine is LJ290206L. -Connected to 1ph 240V- Ground to "-" electrode or torch to "+"-Pedal Model C810-1425, brand SSC Controls CoI am ready to troubleshoot, and thanks for your advice in advance.TravisLast edited by travkroberts; 01-05-2015 at 09:53 PM.Reason: Pictures not attached
Reply:For DC tig the torch goes in the negative side. What is your shielding gas flow set at, are you running 100% argon?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Dave,I was at about 20 CFH, 100% argon. DOH on the torch setup. Will try that way. TravisLast edited by travkroberts; 01-05-2015 at 09:58 PM.Reason: typo

Reply:nice machine ya got! i love those dearly as they are very versatile for the kind of stuff i do.i hope your polarity is the answer to the problem. i know when i get it mixed up, i start the arc, tungsten disappears and then its over.if your problem persists, get rid of the pedal, and if it still persists, try stick welding. if it works try stick in both modes and see if it changes.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Did you flip the knob to tig? It's the one on the bottom in the pic I saw.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:If the previous owner was using it to power a resistance heater, they may have made some odd changes to the settings. Download the manual if you don't have it, and do a factory reset. That will get you back to square one and make it easier to find any problems it may have.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Do you have the manual ? I think that the 200 is 120 volt/ 240 volt. Is the plug end wired correctly ? Not being a smart a$$.
Reply:Thanks all for the quick replies!Dave, the polarity issue got me fixed up with TIG- Arc starts right up, pushing a puddle around now.Tried stick again, with no power. Realized with the pedal hooked up, it overrides the amperage setting. Probably sounds obvious, I wasn't thinking in stick mode it would listen to the pedal. Stomped on it and there my arc appeared. In stick mode, is polarity similar to TIG?Thanks again, tack this post up to a total newbie it seems. As a token of my gratitude, let me help anyone out any of you responders who might need some small turning or cnc mill work job done. I always feel like I get more from forums than I can give. Send me a PM if I can help. TravisLast edited by travkroberts; 01-05-2015 at 10:26 PM.

Reply:do a reset and if that doesn't work take it to the nearest miller dealer. DCEN will weld colder (read sheetmetal) |
