Well, after getting educated on how to post pics in a new thread I'll do so. Anyway, I found these at the dump several yrs ago. They appear to be some type of governor for some really old machinery. After making mounts from some old 3/4" threaded rod I got from, you guessed it, the dump, I compressed them to make flyweights stick out. I wrapped the brass w/ gasline wrap tape and sandblasted all the iron. I then removed the tape and polished the brass w/ the dremel and rubbing compound. Then I sprayed everything w/ penetrol, after that dried I masked the brass and sprayed everything gloss black. After that dried I masked off everything and sprayed the flyweights silver. I then sprayed everything again w/ penetrol. If someone knows what they came off of I'd sure like to know. Reply:But they don't rotate.... They would make a really cool "windmill" if you set them up on bearings to spin in the wind or motorized them..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:they came off a steam engine. its either a watts governor or some derivative of it. the phrase balls to the wall comes from those governors, when at max speed the balls would move outward bc of centrifugal force.
Reply:Rusty pretty well nailed it. SPEED GOVERNORS for a genset or line shaft set up of a steam engine. The governors were driven by a shaft running at PTO speed (the bevel gears at the bottom). The Flyweights (balls) would respond to variances in RPM and extend or retract a rod through the center which was attached to a throttle valve on the inlet side of the engine.Like rusty said the term "balls to the Wall" and "BALLS OUT" came from these things. You guys all have better dumps than I do! Reply:You wont find anything like that around my area. Florida is the worst for old machinery etc.
