Hello,I have cross-braces between the legs on a table which are .125" x 4 x 2 tube, and around 100" long.On the inside (diagram shows outside...) of these braces, I want to attach six pieces of angle iron (probably around 1.5x1.5" and 2" long), to support shelving.Given that both the inside (to be welded) and the outside of the tube are firmly fastened to the table legs, i don't think there will be as much warping as on a tube by itself.  I'm still debating whether it will warp more than 1/16" out of true, which would cause clearance issues with the shelves.Thoughts or expectations appreciated. Thanks!
Reply:what weld process? MIG? how much weight on the shelves? Can you get away with drilling a single hole in the angle iron brackets and just plug welding them to the 2x4 tube? .125" and 4" tall is pretty legit, I seriously doubt it will warp as long as you don't weld the piss out of it. Alternatively, Can you do a single piece of angle instead of six small pieces? easier alignment and less welding. Bigger welds out near the end where there is no leverage to warp the 2x4 and some heavy tac welds in the middle. More angle iron required but overall less welding in the middle area of the 2x4.
Reply:Just weld parallel with the long run of the tube horizontal only.

Reply:Also, while we're at it............  LET ME STRESS THE CENTROID.  The center of just about any structural shape (channel, tubing, angle, beam) is stress neutral.  Welding in the centroid causes the least amount of distortion, and also causes the least compromise to the structural integrity of the shape itself."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
