I am a student looking for info on different welding opportunities. My main interest at this point is …(I don't know the terminology) a job site to job site welder. I have also heard them called "road warriors"? Do I have to work for a company or can I be self-employed? I am also wondering how to land a job like this, a weld test, paper test or both? On a pipeline, for instance, do I just show up and compete with others for the job?  Any other info anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Reply:Oh boy where to start? Going to work for your self in the welding business, with out a track record. Buying insurance will stop you dead in your tracks. In my opinion it's best to go to work in a fab shop for a few years, where you weld everyday, and learn how to fabricate.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I firmly agree with CEP the least I know of u have to have a million dollar insurance coverage and need to get ur name out there so that u can get plenty of work or u will starve to death.
Reply:Would a good option be offshore welding for some experience ? Or even for a permanent job? Is there any kind of retirement ?
Reply:you can forget about a pipeline until you get about ten years under your belt.
Reply:also, there aren't too many paper tests in welding.
