I started a Night class a few weeks ago at a local BOCES. We started out cutting some 1/4 in steel with the oxy/acytelene torch. Then we ran some stringers with 7018 on the same steel. Last week we did some vertical weave with 7018 on 1/4 in steel.  I used a Thermal Arc Arcmaster 160s. They also have Miller Dynastys and A few lincoln square wave machines. So here are some picsof my first ever attempt at vertical weave.the right half of the one below was done without running a root and a couple passes on top so that's why i started to get so much undercut. Reply:Thanks for the input DSW. I have class again on Tuesday, i'll work on what you said and post some more pics.Eastwood TIG 200NAPA 83-315 MIG
Reply:DSW saves the day again! Thanks for tips. I learned something too!
Reply:DSW is on track.Start on one side when weaving, move quickly across the center and pause on the other side, then move up and quickly across to the other side and pause, then quickly straight across to the other side and pause. Never pause or slow down in the center when weaving vertical up. Pause and fill only on the sides, the center will take care of itself when weaving vertical up. Run your machine as hot as you can to just be able to keep it under control. The hotter you can run, the smoother your weaved cap will look when finished.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Not holding the sides long enough, and moving to fast, dont be scared of the puddle.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:listen to tozzi and dsw on the vertical weave.  these 2 guys input and pics are part of teh reason i finally figured it out.  i'm right handed and i was having problems with undercut on the left side.  i was not waiting for the puddle to fill in.  massive undercut.  i just kept telling my self when i came across the middle, to wait as long as could and then wait a little more.  this was about right.  wait laonger than you think you need to and that will really help the undercut.  when the light comes on, you'll wonder why you couldn't always do it.  good luck and keep burnign rod.
Reply:I had my welding class again tonight. I kept plugging away on my vertical weave. I think overall my results were better tonight than last time but I will let you guys be the judge!Used a Thermal Arc arcmaster at 118-120 amps.1/8" 7018 electrode. (lincoln excalibur)1/4" mild steel. I'm a lefty by the way. Just thought I'd let you know.So here they are. Please critique. I'm practicing for the AWS cert so all input no matter how detailed is always welcome and appreciated.Eastwood TIG 200NAPA 83-315 MIG
Reply:You have minimized the undercut, that's a good thing.Your tie ins need a bit of work however to eliminate the happy face you are getting between rods. When you start a new rod and attempt to tie in to the existing weld, start the arc on one side and move across to the other side very slowly and low down against where you left off. That will help the new rod deposit (which is now much cooler) blend in nicely to the the weld where you left off with the last rod. Your amperage is in the ballpark for the rod your using.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Looks much better!
Reply:1st one center section looks very nice. As mentioned you need to work on tie ins and  your consistency can still use some work in some areas. Overall you are looking much better. Keep practicing and working on all the little details and try to be as consistent as possible and you will get there..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:try dragging the electrode downwards when you strike the arc so that you weld right over the top of your arc strikes, makes for a much cleaner look, and it just looks bad to have arc strikes next to your welds....im some cases its not toleratedone more thing, CLEAN your welds BEFORE you show us pictures...tsk tsk tskMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Thanks guys! I have to say when I first started welding I didn't like stick so much but now that I've been doing it more I really enjoy it.      I will work on tieing in for sure. Is that just as simple as hangin out a little longer on the sides? When I strike my arc I do strike downward over the area I'm about to weld so it covers up. I might have a couple stray arc strikes in these pics though. Sorry about the uncleanliness when I took these pics I didn't have a brush handy. Thanks again for the input everyone. More to come next week!Eastwood TIG 200NAPA 83-315 MIG
Reply:haha i was showing some pics of a mig like tig bead i had done before with flux wire, lol i broke out the metal polish and gave the bead a rub down lmao im undiagnosed OCD im with you man, i never really liked stick welding that much, until i used the old RT lincoln, then it was like woa, its so easy, so are you just tryin to cert on plate or are you gonna go for pipe also? the local college here says you gotta have 60hrs classroom time and then you take the test to certify whats the one your doing?Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:I'm gonna go for plate. I probably wont be ready for pipe for a little while. I tried 6g pipe with TIG and it was like whoa talk about a humbling experience.     I'm doing a one night a week class through the local BOCES in Saratoga Springs,NY. The instructor told us that if we were ready by the time the class is don e, which is June 25th, he would have a inspector come in and test us. I hope I'm ready because the cost will be significantly less than trying to get it anywhere else. It's a pretty sweet class the instructor kinda lets us decide what we wanna keep practicing. He showed us stick first doing some stringers on a joint like the one in the pics. Then vertical weave. He introduced MIG this week but told us if we wanted to continue practicing stick for the cert that we could. So I kept sticking. I probably will next week too.Eastwood TIG 200NAPA 83-315 MIG
Reply:Also might want to get in the habit of practicing your tie in placement (planning the weld out). It'll help out in testing if you have your tie ins not in your bend...if your bend testing. Just something to keep in mind.
