Does anyone know if the Hobart Handler MIG welder is a quality machine? It got alot of good reviews from customers, but I never really heard of it. Anyone heard anything about it?
Reply:they are just rebadged millers.
Reply:I've got a vintage TG-301 and a Handler 210, both have treated me very well sofar.

Reply:IT'S A MILLER???NOBODY TOLD ME THAT WHEN I BOUGHT IT$%$&^@#!Actually, it's not a bad machine.  The only thing that's a little quirky is how it handles the bigger rolls of wire.  The roller drive doesn't have the nuts to pull the bigger roll until you cut some of the wire roll tension spring off.  I think I removed about 1/3 the total length of the coil spring.  Even backed out, the original spring is too tight to allow the drum to turn after you've used around half the wire.  Increasing tension on the drive rollers helps a little, but I don't like to put that much tension on the rollers.I looked inside a similar sized Lincoln, and liked the system better.  The rollers are connected by a side gear top and bottom.  Maybe the Miller/Hobart does too, and it's out of sight behind the panel.  Dunno.  But I have had minor feed problems. It's a goddamn Miller, a MILLER^%$*@#! geesh!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Yeah I was referred to them because they are a little bit cheaper on average than miller and lincoln.
Reply:Well a company by the name Illinois Tool Works (ITW) owns both Miller and Hobart. That doesn't mean the either is a "rebadge" of the other.
Reply:Ok, I'm feeling better nowActually don't really know if it's true, there's no Miller dealer closer than 50 miles so I actually haven't seen one to be sure.I'm gonna look for smudges of blue paint on that thing tomorrow"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yeah, they are not rebadged. While they do have some common parts, they are different. When I was beta testing the HH210, I put it through some hard paces and it held up just fine. While they are marketed to hobby types, they can hold their own in an industrial market as well.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:Hobart's Handler 187 and 210 are both very nice units. Attached are a few weld bead produced with a loaner Handler 210. The Handler 187 will produce similar results too. I know this because I own a 187. Attached Images
Reply:Anyone interested in welding who hasn't heard of Hobart must be living in a cave.Go to the Hobart website and do a search on HH187 or HH210.  I doubt seriously if you'll find many unhappy customers.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I am a hobby welder but I am very happy with my Hobart 140. It works very well for something that will work on a 20 amp circuit. it usually blows a 15 amp especially if there is any other load. for a home shop I think it is a great machine. Looking at pics on this site I have seen them sitting on carts right above some real nice TIG machines which says to me if someone can afford that tig welder they can afford to get just about any mig they want. I hope farmersam is not lauphing at us with his post and those welds look great to me even though ther is some spatter.
Reply:I can't be any happier with my HH187.  I am a hobby welder too and don't really do anything heavy but it has impressed me a lot.  I've only used a few other welders and all of them had problems because the owner messed them up, or so I think.Hobart Handler 1871998 VW Jetta TDI - 1997 VW Jetta Project Carhttp://calebhammel.com

Reply:I have been very happy with my little HH180.  Of course the day after I bought mine they came out with the 187.Mine handles 10lb rolls of wire just fine.i own both a hobart 125 wire feed with flux core and a miller225 thunderbolt ac stick welder both good machines i dont have a 220 set up in (lab) garage for 220 so the hobart does most of the heavy lifting, flux core isnt bad but its smoky and alot of spatter does any one have the mig set up for hobart 125 w regulator and tank im think i shoud get it but 90 buks and a tank lease isnt in the cards just yet
Reply:Originally Posted by lugweldWell, yes and no...Much of their parts are in common.  But talking to Miller and Hobart guys at the shows,  they are nearly identical in design, yet where the $$$ items are concerned, favor is given to Miller.  Drives, windings etc. are better quality and designs than Hobart.  If you don't believe it, look at the Hobart duty cycle ratings, they are generally less than the Miller equivalents.  Even now, those Hobarts aren't cheap enough so, they have come out with a cheaper line to sell in those markets where Miller and Hobart lines are already represented.  My fatherin law just bought a 140 amp model MIG...Sorry little fatherless stepchild..I am desperately trying to remember that trade name..WeldPro, Weldtrade,Weldcraft...Something like that, but in small print it says something about ITW and Miller. But it is a piece of junk...
