Reply:Good on Mandau!I wonder about the lower through-hole in the main casting of Tortis's mill.Could it possibly be a location for a horizontal cutting head?Good Luck
Reply:Mandau, I have one of those, complete with the  7 drawer cabinet, sitting three feet to my right as I type this. I have replaced the original leather belt with a polyurethane one; otherwise it's original except for wear. Most of the pin-stripping is still on it.  Lots of stories it could tell if it could only speak.

Reply:Wow... u should have a manual hand winding system and option of electric dynamo drive ... cool That is like cadillac of sewing machine at that era...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:It does have a bobbin winder, but the treadmill is actually more easily controlled (and better exercise too) than a motor drive, according to The Expert who mainly used it..

Reply:I found out that someone removed the bottom half of the arm.  I don't know why. Here is the motor and pulley assm. This is the cover for the gears and the copper tubing is for oiling the lower shaft and bushing. These of course are the gears.Still wondering if the gear on the vertical shaft should be on bottom.I can hardly find any info on this mill.   From what I gather, it was made around 1920, and as you can tell has been modified.  It is missing a bunch of stuff.  Here is a link that tell a lot about it.  You will see I am missing a lot of attachments.http://www.lathes.co.uk/I am pretty much as of right now, just going to use it to cut the slots in the guards for the knives I am going to make, and maybe a few other things.

Reply:Denrep, your eyes are very good.  That makes me feel better.  When this mill runs, it just hmmmm's right along.Thank You.
Reply:I guess I was wrong about the 'countershaft'. According to the photo, it looks as if power was delivered by a sliding belt to the cone pulley/mainshaft from an overhead  lineshaft, was delivered by gearing to the shaft for the vertical drive above, and by the pulleys on the rear of the  mainshaft drove the input shaft for table feed below.Looks much heavier built in the 'Company photo' than as a stripped down real-life mill. What great 'restoration' possibilities!
