Reply:I have some anvils I made out of rr track a few years ago.  Awesome anvils.  Heavy stuff. I got it from a guy that had made a box blade for a lil' tractor out of it but the tractor couldn't move it.Anything can be fabricated on-site. Truth is fabricated online.
Reply:I've gotten two chunks of railroad track over the years. I got them (drum roll please),down by the Railroad tracks.
Reply:The chunk of track we have been lugging around for the last 25 years we got...(another drum roll, please)...down by the railroad tracks too!!  I don't know how heavy it is, but I can remember how tiring it was for us two ~10 year old kids to drag/carry/curse at that thing for about a mile through the woods back to the house!!  That musta been the longest mile we ever walked!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Check your local scrap yards. They should have a piece. That's where I got mine. I got a 3' piece a couple years agofor like 10.00, and that was only because they had to cut a section of 3' off the longer piece. I brought it home and shaped on it with the torch and it turned out decent.
Reply:Do you have any Rail Yards close by? That's where I got mine, Went in and asked if they had a piece they could sell me, I needed like 3' and the guy just gave it to me, and it was 8' and free!If I Can't Weld It!-----It Can't Be Welded!

Reply:I know where there's about 10'  laying by the tracks here in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. I'm just about 8 miles south of Chattanooga, right on the Tn line.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:anyone have pics of these things before/after????
Reply:Yeah Joe, I know where Ft Oglethorpe is.  Not too awful far from me. Might be longer getting back hauling a full stick of train track and running from the police.  I wouldn't have a problem going and getting a hunk of it as long as I don't get arrested in the process.  If you know anyone who knows anything about those pieces, hit me back and I'll try to head up that way Sunday. Thanks again,ScottMiller 225GLincoln 215Magnum Spool GunA/O RigIf I can step over it, I can weld it!
Reply:I went by there today and stopped, thinking I'd chunk it in the truck. That 10' piece is more like 20'!It's in a pretty secluded place, on the outskirts of Chickamauga Battlefield Park. I'd like a chunk too. If we could work out a way to cut it we could halve it. I would drive home with a 20' stick, it's only about 2 miles from the house. I just need help getting it in the truck, it probably weighs 500+ pounds.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:joe, I would say it weighs closer to 850 pounds. Remember to lift with you legs and not your back lol.G3miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41     victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter        hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.
Reply:If it was mainline rail it was probably 115 lb rail so figure more like 6.66 yards X 115 lb/yd.  So right around 760 lbs.  Eat your Wheaties!  If you can cut through the head and flange and drop it it would likely snap off the web.  Of course that picking and dropping works better if you have a machine to lift it with.  A quickie saw cuts it pretty handily, just real noisy.  A torch is quiet but the laight is apt to draw attention.  I got lucky, had a connection with a company that does rail maintenance.  He got a couple lengths, along with the truck to carry it and lift/drop to ease the cutting.  I think we ended up with 10 or 11, 3 ft pieces.  They make super (read "cheap") weights on the back of my stout old garden tractor. Reply:go to your local rail road bone yard and talk to them see if they have any used old rail never know what you might find
