My dad was using my 3 pt splitter the other day and managed to get a splitting wedge(like you use with a maul) jammed into a large knotty piece and ran it into my splitters wedge. Ironic if you really think about it. Anyway, goofed up about a dime to nickel sized gouge on the leading edge of the 3pt splitter wedge. What rod size/type do I need to repair? I have a Lincoln AC/DC buzzbox. Heat setting on machine? Also, does the splitter wedge need to be heated first? Its a Danuser 3 point.tksTom
Reply:Couldn't you just grind it sharp and leave it as "Chalk one up to Experience"?Welding the leading edge(assume this means knife edge) will be tricky as you are going thick to thin.Heat setting will be based on the thought of working thin material.Preheating(IMO) will not be required as the steel of the wedge is probably not very hard anyways.
Reply:I think it is a TIG job, or replace the entire cutting edge, I think someone probably sells the edge some manufacturers use. A fellow locally used to use pivot stock he stole from his former employer, Howe Scale in Rutland VT. A buzz box will be a poor choice to build up a cutting edge.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Or tip it so the blade faces up and you can weld horizontal. Build it up to whatever width you need to replace the broken area and grind it back to the original shape. If you find it too soft grind some of it out and replace it with hardfacing and grind it into shape. Research here for the type of thing you want http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...ardfacing.aspxor look at Stoody or there are some oxy/acet applied formulations with boron. search boron hardfacing with oxy/acet or something similar. As for electrodes I'd probably just use 6010 or 6011 or maybe 7018. and you may find them already hard enough unless you keep splitting splitting wedges. Current- in the range for the electrode. Don't waste your time trying to weld to a sharp edge, just weld wider and grind it. Have fun.---Meltedmetal

Reply:I used my heavy, all steel splitting maul (18-20lbs) to break concrete once - my sledgehammer handle broke and I was irritated and in a hurry...When done, I just welded it up and ground it sharp again - no big deal.On my splitting wedges, when they mushroom out at the top, I run some beads around and fix it right up.So have at it and don't worry too much Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:On my wedge, I removed it and laid a couple of beads of Stoody 31 hard facing on each side of the edge with just a little overhang.Although hard facing is not supposed to be able to be machined, it can be ground down with a grinder. It was ground to a knife edge a couple of years ago and now looks almost identical to how it looked when first re-done.The wedge is just a little bit longer and the hard facing looks like a 1/8" cover cap. I'd take a photo but it is tarped up for the winter. This method has pretty much been recommended in a post or two above.Lincoln AC buzzboxLincoln AC/DC buzzboxHobart 125EZ (110V flux-core)Everlast PA200 (stick)Everlast PA300 (stick)Everlast PP70 (plasma cutter)O/A outfitSeveral Metabo, Bosch, HF grinders set up differentlyMisc tools
