Hey guys,I'm looking at making a laptop stand for my car. I plan on mounting the single leg to the passenger seat mount bolt hole. My question is however: where would I find an arm (or I can fab one) that in particular swivels?! I need to be able to move it up/down and then tighten it (think bike seat post with the lever, or even a wingnut type tightening system). What would you guys do? Where would you buy joint knobs? HERE's a link to something similar. See the picture below as an example (don't pay attention to the top plate, I've got that covered):Last edited by wgr73; 12-04-2012 at 11:56 AM.MM211 w/Spoolmate 100
Reply:Huh, that's funny, I was just thinking about this the other day. I'll be building one in the near future as well, need something to hold the laptop that controls the tuning on my car. I haven't thought about the design yet in depth, but I thought I could use the ball bearing pivot system that's found in this link: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=48154Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Reply:Yup, too expensive. This from amazon (CLICK) is much more reasonable.Ideally I'd like to just use what I have, if not I wouldn't hesitate to buy the amazon mountMM211 w/Spoolmate 100
Reply:I built that exact idea for my iPad. 1" round tube bolted to the passenger seat bolt. It's a two part mount so it can swivel and be removed when I'm not offloading. For the iPad mount itself I went with Ram Mount products. They sell every kind of mount ever needed. Looking straight down on the floor mount. The swivel arm and iPad mount attached. Ram mount attached to my handy work

My plan is to buy a small Acer Aspire One 10" notebook and stick it in the backseat/glovebox when not in use. Keep an eye out on Ebay, and you could snag a notebook and buy that mount for a total of ~$225.

Reply:That works! What about cutting that front lip down so that your wrist doesn't hit it when using the computer? Or isn't that an issue? Also, you could run the USB wire up inside the tubing to eliminate the excess.

Reply:I made one for a Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 set in tablet mode (touchscreen use only). Mine doesn't swivel though, it can only be rotated to one side (passenger use) or the other (driver use). I use it for the Garmin Nroute application matted with an USB GPS receiver. It is also paired with a Garmin GPSMap 60cx just in case one of them craps out and I am left in the middle of the Sahara dessert with no navigation means... lol.I have a VW van with plenty of space up front, so maybe this mounting doesn't suit you very well. I made it out of plate (3mm), tube and some tigthening "thingys" I had arround. I weld it it together with 2mm 6013 (I didn't have a MIG at the time). The base (where the tube locks) it is bolted (5 8mm bolts) to the base of the seat which is plenty stout. At the time I didn't have a Toughbook so I used a regular laptop. I made an aluminum base for it and I just strapped the laptop to it. Since then I have painted the whole thing and built a different lock (spring loaded) base for the Toughbook but I don't have any pictures of it.I hope it helps!
