Some one out there knows your schedule knows you have lots of cool stuff and knows when you leave your stuff unattended and wants to get money to stay high or drunk for a week or weekend. The thought of some one stealing equipment and gear from an honest hard working person who has built it up over many years just so they can get high for a little while really disgusts me. I would have to say the best thing to have is insurance and pictures or other proof of your stuff. Renters insurance has saved my *** once and I do not want to have to use it again. It looks like thieves really like to steal stuff out of detached garages, followed by attached garages (a close second). To keep people out of the garage I park a vehicle against the garage door, not just near the garage door but actually touching it. Apparently they have figured out that if you hit a garage door just right can pop it open. They tried that on mine, only problem was there was a crow bar jammed in each side.Had a vehicle been parked in front of it I wouldn't have to get a new garage door. If the vehicle was inside parked against the door I think the damage would have been limited to a foot print on the door. Another thing I have done is barred windows and put nicer lockable storm door on the out side with a pad lock on the out side of the door between lockable the storm door, this makes it so the door cant be opened from the inside or outside with out a key.Make sure they cant get in, if they can get in, make sure they cant get out, you will be surprised by how little they will take if they can only get items out through a window. Be sure to secure or hide hacksaws and sledge hammers so they cant bust or get pissed and smash up what they cant take.Hasps: I was at lowes the other day and bought what I thought was a good $13 hasp. Nope. The hinge wasn't even a hinge, it was 2 hinge halves driven into the hinge barrel. These faux hinges can be pried out with a decent screw driver and a hammer. To remedy this I popped the hinges out and put a metric bolt that had its threads snapped off that the shank and cold hammered the shank of the bolt to a nice mushroom. It sucks that you cant even get a decent hasp for $13.Some tack welds on each faux hinge would have worked but I wanted to go a little overboard. Then make stuff too big to steal. Some one tried to steal my welder this year but they only managed to pull the power cord out of it. My mig was bolted to the over sized welding cart with 2 gas bottles. There is no way 2 smaller guys are going to lift it up into the back of a pickup.Since then I have welded hard tie down points to my welding cart and bought a lot of chain, cable and locks. If I have to leave for the weekend with out it I chain it to something immoveable. They could have stolen my plasma cutter but it was packed up tight in its road case, and the road case was being used as a table, perfectly camouflaged.I don't have a welding truck but I saw a welding truck in town, this poor guy must have had his stuff stolen several time. He had his welding cables rolls wrapped with big heavy chain over and over again, chain almost completely covering the cables and he had his cutting torch regulators removed. Some crack head can cut your lines and take your regulators and get about $3 for each for them at a scrap yard.I buy tanks and regulators all the time from the scrap yard, not sure how they got there...Fences with locking gate and dogs appear to keep people away pretty good, as far as I can tell I don't think any one has tried to take every thing from the back yard or try to access it. Every one the trail cam catches is on the correct side of the fence. As opposed to the front yard, the trail cam catches random jerks in the middle of my yard waking through between 2 and 3:30 am way too often.I am going to try rigging up about 1200 watts worth of motion detector lights and see if that drives them away. A tesla coil on a motion sensor would be ideal buy may have legal implications.Hedge hogs, my idea of a lawn orderment: I finished the my first one, real pointy and nasty, there is one place in the back yard where if some one would try and go over the fence that is where they would do it, this is where I plan to store my sharp pointy hedge hogs. Only problem is then I have to keep the dogs form impaling their selves on said hedge hogs.Once I get several more they will pop up in other fun locations. I may use large rocks or hedge hogs to coral vehicles to where I can get good pictures of them.Get some game cameras to track the most dangerous game. If some one does take your gear and you have pictures of them doing it and know who they are Chances are the police still wont do anything even if you do 90% of their job for them. You are likely going to have to take matters into your own hands. old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Yup it is getting bad in this country we live in! I live a little ranching town of about 2,000 people and the theft and drugs are even hitting us.Up until last year I never thought twice about leaving my leads coiled up in clear view on my work truck. Or my pistol on my dashboard/ rifle in rear window in my never locked pickup Hell my one rifle never came out of it unless it was to clean it. but after having my wife's car broken into and having some cash stolen. It all gets locked up now(still pisses me off when I lock the keys in my truck as I have yet to break the habit of leaving the keys in the ign....) My home shop is near my bedroom window so I am lucky that way on hearing someone in my shop at night. But I am convinced that I would find them trapped in the am as my roll up door assist spring broke a few years ago and I never replaced it and it is bent so it makes a hell of a racket and must be vise gripped in place to stay up and my side barn style door the tin drags in the gravel so that's not too quiet either(not to mention the old WARN alarm bell mounted on a rope and hooked to the door with a loop and nail from the inside open that up at two in the morning and DING! Reply:Unfortunately, regular padlocks are useless.  One good strike with a hammer right next to the shakle will pop them right open and usually leave them able to re-lock after. I've seen it numerous times in my professional life and recently had to use this method personally.  The sad fact is that if someone wants in bad enough then they will get in.  The only thing to do is to make it difficult enough to discourage them and have good insurance for when they do.

Reply:All locks do is keep you covered for your insurance, they don't really deter theft but they do prove that you tried to protect your insured belongings which keeps the insurance companies from denying your coverage. We found that out the hard way, things get stolen from unlocked areas and they don't want to cover them, keep everything locked up and your dues paid and they really have no choice but to cut a check.
Reply:Not even a neighbor. This idiot marched his cows five miles down the road and cut my fence. Innumerable times! Then my guy has to run the lines every single day to find where this meathead cut it. That's about 8 miles of fence. The stray(let loose) dogs are full of mange, ticks and every other damn thing and terrorize the chicken house and hog pens. They get dead. The display is a reminder. I rent land cheap to two other guys who graze beef and sheep here. This idiot is a thieving freeloader. He doesn't even tag his animals(illegal) so when they get hit by a car the car owner has no way to track the animals for compensation. The law is a waste of time. His house is light up like a friday night football game now. we had a street light installed and have dusk till dawn lights. My shop isn't as close to my room as I'd like, but the yapper dog and the real dog let us know if anyone's about. I also have my retired father in law who lives across the street and is always out in his yard working on this that or the other, or he's sitting in his living room or office that both have a straight shot view of my shop. The wife runs a daycare during the day so there is always someone there, or watching. Pictures, and lots of locks. unfortunately My shop isn't big enough to have everything bolted down. but the next one will be.There are no problems. There are only solutions. Litterally across the street. so far as I can tell, him keeping and eye on our place when we're gone, and his skid steer are the only benefits of this arrangement for me at least. He's got access to my tools if he needs though. He's been doing some welding recently. I haven't see the latest project, but based on the results of the last one I saw I'm waiting for him to try to use it so that I can reweld it for him. assuming that he doesn't tear it appart to much when he does use it.There are no problems. Reply:One thing I'll add, avoid the brand "Lorex" for CCTV stuff!  Their cameras aren't bad (but they aren't good either), their PC-based DVR's are PURE **** and customer service and documentation is horrible!  Business I work for had stuff stolen, figured we were set since we had the dvr running NOPE it shut itself off after a crash!  Since then we spent the money we should have early on and bought ourselves an ADT (rebadged Tyco) CCTV DVR, since then nothings gone missing without video of the perp!  One of the guys who we do business with a lot had me set up another ADT/Tyco DVR in his coin op carwash, used the video to catch several lazy assholes in the act of dumping/littering all over his car wash because they're too lazy and cheap to take their **** to the dump!

I live in a rural area, though, and there is always someone around and there are several cars and trucks there at various times through the day. It's been 37 years now in the same place and no burglary yet, but it could happen. One thing is sure, however. If they are going to steal tools, I don't have to worry about the milling machine or the lathe. The mill weighs 3,750 pounds and the lathe is close to 2,000. They would have a tough time getting those out of the barn. LOL.
