Ive seen bolts with like goldish/yellowish/purpleish coating that looks very unsafe to weld on. Is it?Miller Dialarc 250Miller Bobcat 225Hobart Oxy/FuelCouple of Dewalt and Milwaukee GrindersJET Bandsaw and Drill Press
Reply:Is it the usual color that we associate with the cadmium rust-resistant plating on car parts? If so, you don't want to breath ANY of it. Cadmium can be fatal in even small doses.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:The welds will be messy too. As the coating heats up...it off gases into the weld puddle and you get major splatter and a messy bead. Unless you are needing to weld type 8 coated bolts...don't as the gas is very bad for you and it makes a hellava mess...
Reply:There's quite a number of common coatings so it's really hard to say without looking at the brand and its spec. Zinc and cadmium are common then they could be applied as a chromate or dichromate process or a phosphate process."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Probably zinc chromate. Cadmium is very rare these days because of its toxicity. You can remove the zinc chromate with dilute muriatic acid.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps |
