I need to pick up a hammer for school.  my instructor has said a few times that he likes a heavy hammer and that a 32oz is a good size.  Isn't 2lbs kind of light for a weldors hammer? Also, a lot of the hammers I've been seeing have plastic/fiberglass or rubberized handles.  One of the first projects is beating rebars into chisels and punches.  Should I just find a hammer with a wood handle, or maybe something else?Student on a mission.   Be the best. If I can't be the best I sure as hell won't be the worst.
Reply:I don't know how they do this but...If the guy says 32oz, buy the 32oz, and see how you feel about it when using it.  You can always change hammers somewhere down the road. The impact from a heavy hammer is a nice thing, but then ya gotta remember that you gotta lift the damn thing again to make the next impact.I bend a lot of cold roll with a light ball peen hammer, but it sounds like you're gonna do a little forging kinda stuff. The heavier hammer might be just right.  And it will get heavy after about 10 blows"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Every now and then you may need to break out the sledge-o-matic, but not too often. A 32oz ball peen is a good sized hammer for adjusting parts. You should almost never need anything bigger for fab work. Repair work needs something more persuasive sometimes. You don't need a big hammer for blacksmith work. You need a hammer that feels good in your hand, that you can control and swing while only grasping the handle with your thumb and index finger. A big hammer that you need a death grip on will hurt your hand and wrist. Make you feel like you've been locked up for 3 days with a bottle of viagra and a bad porno. I like really smooth wooden handles.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:I never leave home without a variety of hammers.  2lb ball pien is the USUALLY the lightest I'll throw in the truck, though in the shop I keep much smaller.  HOWEVEF my 3 lb blacksmith hammer with a sledge face on one side and a beveled face on the other is my favorite.  Hickory handled ones are affordable and if the shaft breaks,  I keep one or two handles under the seat in my truck.  But really,  even a decent hammer isn't all that expensive these days unless you buy one off  the truck.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:This is what I use all the time, it was a 3 pounder, but the #9 rebar handle added a few extra ouncesDisclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Depends on what you are doing. I carried a 2#, 4#, and a 6# double jack cause I could swing it one handed. I used the lightest that would get the job done easily. If it needed 12#force I called for help. Seriously, if I were in school and the instructor said get a 32 ounce hammer, that's what I would get. You are paying for his instruction aren't you?
Reply:Hey Tozzi,Have you ever had the welds holding that re-bar handled hammer together break?  I ask because I've worked a few places where there were strict policies against 'home-made' tools; especially hammers.  The reasoning I was given is that hammer heads are hard, high carbon steel, which is difficult to weld correctly.  Add in the fatigue damage that accumulates over time, and the hammer head could break away and fly off during use...Because of this, I've always used old-fashioned hickory handles in my hammers.Insofar as hammer weight is concerned, I use the smallest hammer I can get away with.  It's easier on my shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints.  The high tech reason is I can swing a light hammer faster and more accurately, for more time.  Kinetic energy = mass x velocity^2.  Double the hammer mass, double the energy.  Double the head speed, and you get 4x the energy.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:i have nothing  bigger than three pounds..cause thats   the most im gonna swing..if it aint enough i  got a rosebud.. most favorite is a 3#  cross peen like tozzis.. it has a yellow  plastic(?) handle which i burned the day i got it .. its ugly and im gonna get me a stick to put in there...
