This isn't a welding project..... yet. What I have is an older John Deere 430 round baler that has places worn through in the bale chamber from years of hay and dirt rubbing on it. Right in front of the gate on both sides/ above the pickup is where the problem areas are. I'm wondering if I can patch the areas or if the patch being a slightly raised area will cause problems with the bales hanging on it? Or, if I should cut the problem area out and replace it with new material.... this is a much more difficult option that I would rather save as a last resort if possible.Sorry, meant to put this in the welding projects section.... by the time the attachments options was working I somehow got it here. Reply:Well it depends, Do you have enough to weld to without wrapping the corner?  If you have to wrap the corner so to speak you could run into problems with the gate not shutting and locking.Shut the gate and see if you have enough clearance, and if you do have a piece of sheet bent to wrap the corner and weld it in.  Then smooth the welds and edges down with a flap disk and you should be OK.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I think I could do it without wrapping the corner, that short piece around the corner really isn't worn at all since it never gets touched. It's only is messed up in one place but I can just pry it back into position and weld it back down. I think you're right, as long as I don't have a sharp edge left on a patch I should be ok. I just wanted to hear some opinions before I did something so I can avoid causing more problems than I'm fixing.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:if the hay rolls dont hang up now with all that scale and rust, not to mention the holes that it could push into and grab, a 1/8 or small amount more of smooth raised surface should be no problem, you could also get an air flanger that makes a resessed rim around where you want to weld so the final weld is flush with the original material.
Reply:I have patched just about every place there is to patch on most any model JD round baler.  As long as you weld it solid, and grind it smooth you will be ok.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:10ga patch on the floor of my 846 New Holland.  Probably 6-8yrs back.Go ahead and patch it.  Weight of the bale, and the rpms, wouldn't worry about snagging or anything like that.Put your arm in there, and see if the bale hangs up on it  They ain't real sensitive to small obstructions Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:A couple of years ago we had a 535 baler that had baled alot of peanut hay, which is really hard on the baler with all the sand, and we had a local shop weld a sheet of 14 ga. stainless on the entire wear surface.  He didn't bend around the corners, just ground the welds on the edges.  He plug welded numerous places to secure it.  It worked great but was alot of work, belts and rollers were removed.  He had done this several times before with all the peanut hay around here.  Baler worked great but now has been traded in for a new one to eat up.MM 251TD Cutmaster 81Victor JourneymanLincoln SA 200Thunderbolt AC/DC
Reply:Peanut hay is the worse thing to run thry a baler.  I have a client that grows around 2000 acres of peanuts and bales all the hay.  He comes out better trading the baler every year on a new one and paying the difference than trying to keep one for many years.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
