I'm just starting running 6010 and this is what I'm getting.  3/32 rod. Doing whip and pause on a flat fillet weld. What do you all think? What can I do to improve this weld? Any other methods I can try?
Reply:whip and pause is all i know.just keep running it, and get some 1/8" too as the small 3/32" is easy to overwhelm with amperage. 1/8" at around 90 amps will be easier to practice imobosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:second bead looks better than the first. Tell us about the material, and the amps you are running...assuming DCEP?? I think you are getting the hang of it, it just takes practice to get the consistency down.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:That actually doesn't look too bad.  Def get a can of Lincoln 5P+ 1/8.  It will be easier for you to learn on.

Reply:It actually looks like your seeing the puddle pretty good for just starting out.  Which is a good thing!
Reply:I'm not much of a 6010 hand at all. For plate, and open root I do a whip and pause. For 6-G pipe I do a laid over J pattern. For 5-G I do a U pattern. Reply:Its 1/2 5x5 plate. Running about 75 amps on dcep. Im Running a longevity stickweld 140 onda a genny. Should i start by just Running flat beads on some of this plate? And can someone give me any info on a welder? I'm looking at a Lincoln 250 gxt or a lincweld 225. 250 gxt  3,800 brand new or I buy the lincweld 225 that motor runs but don't generate power or weld for 300$ + or - and fix it.
Reply:keep doing what your doing! also try butted and beveled plate!do some more fillet welds and break them! just play with it and have fun. learning doesn't have to be work.as far as engine drives, depends on what you want to do with it. if you wanna get industrial pipe/ structural jobs, buy an sa-200 for cheap and keep your current genny to make up for the lack of ac power the sa 200 doesn't provide.if your more farm/ ag wanting to do fences and small repairs, the 250gxt would probly be fine. im not very familiar with the lincweld but i would research and see if parts are available before investing in a broken onebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:My problem is now in running low on welding materials... Trying to get the most out of the steel I have. And for what I want to do with welding varies. I like welding pipe. But I do live in a high agricultural zone... Lancaster Pennsylvania home of the Amish mafia. So I suppose I'll do a good bit once I get better at welding and get a rig going. Almost had a rig going but got stopped cause I couldn't get insurance for a business cause they couldn't identify me because I have no credit... Sucking being young and fresh out of school. Reply:My dilemma now is I'm out of steel and don't like asking my boss for scrap cause he's a penny pincher. He charged he full price last time I got something out of the scrap bin. And don't have money for full price. So where do I go now?

Reply:First thing is get away from the wiping technic because all that does is cause you to leave undercut on the edges. Learn to start by going side to side with your puddle with each time going up 1/16" to 1/18" on your puddle but watch the backside the puddle so it does fill in evenly and this is on plate with no open ends. Now on pipe with a root pass being made is use a 1/8" rod to start with out wiping technic instead  use a jacking up and down(1/8" to 1/4" moves)long enough to where the puddle of iron cools off long enough to where it don't fall out on you when you add more iron to the bead. Plus by going side to side you have less chance to trap slag in a weld. Next thing you need to learn is heat. First get the heat set to where you are comfortable with then run 1 pass with it to see how it is doing then after that raise the heat about 20 degrees and repeat another pass to see how it runs. Keep raise it up until you can't control it then now you have learned how it can not be welded. Do the same thing going with lower amps until you learn what will not work.Kim HimelInspector/Consulting

Reply:It's whipping not wiping and is considered the standard technique for most 6010 applications. Look at CEP's groove weld, it's about as good as it gets and clearly shows the stack of dimes achieved with a proper whipping technique. Pipe root passes can be done a few different ways depending on individual preference. I had the best luck doing a very slight whip so I could just see the keyhole and more importantly hear the root getting 100% penetration. One shop tried to insist we wore ear plugs all the time. The foreman agreed with me that it's too hard to hear your root with ear plugs. Some guys will drag the rod to do an uphand root pass. It all takes a lot practice but a proper whipping technique doesn't leave undercut. Too hot, too fast, not letting it fill, etc. causes the undercut.
Reply:Going to pick up some 6010 5p+ 1/8 rod. Probably 10lb to start. Got some steel at the local scrap yard. But the weather is not allowing me to weld little cold and snowy.

Reply:Everything in general. We do pipe welding at work. At home use too for small projects and side business.
