Might sound dumb, but I was mig welding in a darker corner of my shop this morning and couldn't see the bead very well. I held a small led flashlight in my non welding hand and put it on the bead while working. May sound silly, but holy crap lit things up great! so now I'm wondering if anyone makes a helmet with some sort of lights attached? I may have to go the red green route and duct tape them to the sides!!
Reply:They make them for mig guns.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:they make lighter lenses for that.

Reply:Lol you don't have to be mentally disabled. Everyone's eyes are different. What type of helmet do you have? And what shade number is it on?
Reply:This would be great for me since most of my welding happens at night.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Somebody showed a photo of a broomstick holder with a flashlight in it.http://www.maxisale.com.au/images/D/...20Maxisale.jpg
Reply:I have been known to flip the hood down while holding a flashlight in my teeth. Probably once a monthMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:There was a young fella on here doing a school project and he was gonna do a helment with led lights in it I wander what ever came of it
Reply:Cheap HF helmet on shade #9. Ambient light sure makes a difference.
Reply:Here's an old Harbor Freight helmet I modified so I could see the wire on my MIG welder in dark areas. It helped on initial starts, but then got a new Lincoln hood and didn't have the heart to drill holes in it. The light is from one of those head lights with the strap from Home Depot. It's really bright and has two light levels. It swivels so you can aim it at what you want and folds out of the way when not in use. Attached Images

Reply:A better quality helmet can make a huge a diference. I started with a $49 Amazon helmet and couldn't see crap. Then I bought a $100 Kobalt and things were much better. Now that I'm welding in all sorts of conditions I got a Miller Digital Elite. That helmet is the best I've used. Even better than than my buddy's Speedglass. Of course your milage may vary.HF 98233 Stick/TigHF  95136 PlasmaEastwood TIG200Eastwood MIG250Damn, I cut it twice already and it's still too short!
Reply:The lighting in my shop is absolute crap when its below about 40 degrees, so I keep a clamp on halogen light with my cart in order to see... Wrapping a crappy headlamp around the welding hood seems like a good idea for darker places."I thank God for all the freedoms we've got in this country, I cherish even the right to burn the flag, but I'll tell you what, we've also got the right to bear arms and if you burn my flag I'll shoot you"-Johnny Cash

Reply:Wait a second!!!   What if you used a strong LED light (i.e. halogen knock off) and fixed shade????      I pull out the old fixed shade sometimes on 7024 and 7018; I might have to try this next time.I've also used the extra flashlight to get a better view of the work and the puddle.       I suspect that the reason it helps is that the brighter light shrinks the pupil so it's already close to being adjusted when you strike the arc.   As I understand,  a smaller pupil frequently gives better focus.A small flashlight with a 3 watt LED and tight reflector can run a long time on a pair of AA batteries.Dan----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X
Reply:Petzle makes headlamps for backpackers etc, but they have an optional quick mount adhesive attachment so you could put it on a helmet or hard hat.  They are a top of the line light.

Reply:There are lots of times when I hold a Harbor Freight $2.00 LED light with my left hand while I mig.  I don't care how good the lenses are on your helmet, extra light on the subject never hurts.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Ya like mentioned above, the harbor freight helmet is the problem.  I had one of those for about 6 months going through welding school.  bought a optrel and it is soo much more clear and brighter.  (both with the lense darkened and not darkened.)Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450

Reply:Originally Posted by MikeGyverIt would actually run for about half an hour or so...A Duracell AA alkaline battery is about 1Wh at a high discharge rate of >1A so two batteries gives 2Wh capacity, running a 3watt led uprated to 3.6watts to account for a typical 80% efficiency for the voltage boost driver which would be required since white led forward voltage is around 3.3v... so 2wh/3.6w=.555x60m=~33 minutes...or ~twice as long if run at half power, etc.
Reply:yup, most new hi-power leds when not driven at full power are over 100 lm/w, lots o light when it's only a foot from your faceWelding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
