Power Supply for Suitcase

I have a Miller S-32P.  I also have a Mig 131.  Can I not use the 131 as a power supply for the S-32P?  I am certain a modification or 2 would need to be made, but the S-32P shouldnt care where its power comes from but just that the power delivered is within its specifications.

Reply:Hello kjohnson1, in "theory" you could use the S-32P as a slave feeder from your Mig 131. You'll notice I said: in "theory", that's about the only way that you could feasibly make it work. You would have to find a way to pull power from the wire gun connection on the Mig 131(off of the block that the gun clamps into) to hook up to the power lead on the S-32P. Then you would have to provide a way to close the trigger switch connection on the Mig 131(this would energize the welding output of the Mig 131). Now you would have weld output from your mig power source, yet in order to provide for amperage control output you would need to disconnect the wire tensioning bale on the feeder(the feed rolls would be turning and as you increase their speed you increase amps out, decreasing wire speed the amps would be decreased). The S-32P would need to be connected as normally connected, voltage sensing clip to ground on part to be welded, + lead from the Mig131 connected to your improvised connection on the feeder/gun connection block, and the - negative ground clamp from your Mig 131 connected to the part to be welded. In order to set the S-32P to weld you would use the wire speed control on the Mig 131 to control the amount of heat delivered and the wire speed nob on the S-32P to provide the right amount of wire. From this description you can probably see why you would be better off to simply find a CV power source to work with your S-32P and have the ability to run solid wire in short circuit, globular, or spray transfer as dictated by shielding gas and voltage/wire speed settings. A CC power source will work for the S-32P yet it won't be capable of short circuit transfer with solid wire regardless of gas or machine settings. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald

It can and has been done with bigger MIG machines, but putting a kill switch to shut off the drive motor while the feeder is connected to it is usually what you want to do and having the contactor on for extended periods of time in a lighter duty MIG machine isn't real good for it. Contacts tend to get smoked and can weld together after time, causing other problems. On older, large MIG CV power sources with a contactor, but no dedicated remote switch, a patch cable is usually cobbled up and connected to the contactor out that turns it on and allows it to stay on so you have constant power to the welding leads all the time. Smaller machines don't do too well doing that tho. Not at least from what I have seen.Best off finding a dedicated CV power source. Reply:I subscribe.  Being that we're all poor (including me), I was hypothesizing.  The end results even if I went through the effort would not be what is desired.  This 131 can barely get out of its own way.
