It's a bonus when I have to disassemble something made with wire welds  Makes my job EASY PEASYNo penetration, so the razor wheel just nips it off, and a few taps with a hammer..........I'M DONEDid I say NO PENETRATION?????????  Why yes I didAll y'all can puff your chests out, and say "I do it right", "this was obviously a hack job", and on and on and on and on and on.  But if you want heavier stuff welded IT TAKES STICK TO DO IT.(I believe I got 3 threads going now)  (idiot)"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I agree, Samm. I use my mig mostly because almost everything I weld is .060 to 3/16". Reply:I have to agree lots of mig welds don't have penetration like stick.... On the other hand out some NR 233 or some ultracore and wire becomes a while different animal. ..... Plenty of penetration and will run circles orotund stick in most cases. Now I stick weld every day for a living. It can be highly productive but generally takes more skill than wire to run 3/16 or 7/32 stuck rods.   I haven't used a cutting wheel in forever... Reply:Yes, prep is important. So is choosing the right process for the job at hand. If it's clean metal, 1/4" or less and in the shop, MIG is the right tool for the job. If it's none of those, get out the sticks. And, of course, TIG for the small and pretty stuff.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Tangle I agree that it isn't fair comparing the two processes together. I was making the point that stick is not the only way or the preferred way to do heavy welding. 3/32 ultra core can put some weld down that spray mig can't think about as far as penetration and production. If you have heavy 2 to 8 inch  heavy welding to do get out the big guns. This little project would be right as rain with some 5/32 7018.Like the bison to lamb analogy you speak my country folk language.

Reply:In the 1970s I worked for 3-years in a NRC approved fab shop. The NRC required that all welders re-test every 3-months. Never once failed a 1-inch side bend test with 1/16-inch Mig wire. Reply:Site prep, and procedure/settings are everything. regardless of the method/tool used to do the job. Proper site prep in combination with proper procedures and settings make a HUGE difference. and yes proper procedure dictates that you use a machine capable of doing the job at hand. a 110 machine can't do the work of a 220 machine which can't do the work of a 440 machine. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:A representative from a heavy (giant mining equipment) manufacturer once told me they use dual shield flux core for all of their heavy equipment welding. But then again, I guess flux core sort of counts as stick.
