So recently i have come into the need for a press brake, It would basically just be used for aluminium and would only ever see at max 3/16" if that.Big reason is first i need a new tool box for my truck but i also have a couple people interested in truck boxes and storage compartments, along with headache racks. As far as design i was originally thinking 4' would be more then enough but now that i have people interested in headache racks and side rails i'm thinking i should go with something just over 8' so i can bend up the aluminium rail caps.As far as material goes i got a bunch of I-Beams and H-Beams sitting here being useless so i figure i could go with that for the main frame. I kinda have a general idea in my head as of how it would be built but would like to see what people have built in the past that is Known to work.Forgot to mention it would be Hydraulic. Thanks for any help,ReidLast edited by Reid; 10-17-2013 at 11:23 PM.Reason: Check it twice, edit it once.Miller Dialarc HF-P w/ Water CoolerMiller Regency 200 w/ Miller Spool gunHypertherm Powermax 65
Reply:Do you know what alloy diamond plate your thinking of using? Depending on the temper and alloy figure between 4.1 tons (3003-H14) and 8.4 tons (6061-T6) per foot to air break 90 degrees with a 1.5" die opening. Your just around 35 tons for 4 feet and 70 tons at 8 feet. I've seen photos of some very interesting multiple cylinder presses using beams. The trick will be to keep all your cylinders balanced. This is one I've always thought looked interesting:A larger press has been on my to-do list forever. I have a 40 ton right now and it's too small. Keep us posted on your project.

Reply:Check out my Homebuilt Press Brake thread with pics posted last year on 12-29-12. The thing is awesome and continues to amaze me. It will bend 3/16" four feet wide to 90 deg. And cheap...a couple hundred for the 2 jacks. Sorry, haven't figured how to link it for you.POVERTY...is the Mother of InventionMillermatic 211Millermatic 140Miller Thunderbolt XLArcOne 100STS inverter w/TIGThermal Dynamics 38XL Victor Oxy/AcetyleneJancy Slugger Holemaker IIJet 5x6 BandsawNever enough time & sleep.

Reply:After reading Besrks post on Pirates 4x4 forum I contacted him several times and he continues to makes some improvements to his 48 inch press brake.   If you follow his post to page number 10 a member of the forum Tractorguy has a 72 inch press brake he built .   A very nice build. Much more simpler in design and could be modified many different ways from a large press brake to a small one that Randy mentioned in his post.  Tractorguy purchased his plans from a fellow in Oklahoma.  I too purchased a set of plans from the fellow in Oklahoma  and am gathering up components from my junk pile to build some type of press brake.  If you google pressbrakeplans.com  the website of the owner of the plans should come up.  Apparently  he has built some 12 ft x 150 ton units from the photos that he has posted.   I found it quite interesting  and all three parties very eager to help with information on building press brakes. I know you probably do not need a very large unit but the post might give you some interesting reading.   I am debating as to what to build.  When I need a press brake I need a press brake but I am too rational in trying to figure out what I really need and how much I will use it vs the size and cost involved.  Sometimes I think one of the simple unit that SWAGOFF ROAD sells in kit form is more than adequate and from talking to Troy he knows what hes doing and sells a lot of the units.  Might look into one of his units.  richey
