I know it varies regionally, but what are you paying when buying steel by the lb or what's a good range to feel good about?  I've been visiting the local recyclers looking for steel plate some of the prices end up being what I'd pay for it at the metal supplier.  I tried searching for the price on google, but only found wholesale large volumes by the mt.
Reply:I paid $3.25. At first they said $2/lb but my receipt saiz $3.25 scrap price.
Reply:I just bought some aluminum and steel tubing from the local recycler...steel was $0.30/lb and the aluminum was $1/lb.
Reply:Black Friday deal of $0.50/lb steel and $2.00/lb aluminum.  Normally $0.70 and $2.50.
Reply:Hot rolled has been running me about $1.00/lb.  I bought a 5'x5'x5/8" plate for scrap price,  figured to be $.22/lb.  The plate was just left over from a project, and they had no use for it, so they said pay us what the scrap guy does and it's yours.
Reply:$.12 a lb. for steel in Utopia, TX

Reply:Picked up a full stick of 3/8x3x20' day before yesterday.  $45.  That makes it around 59 cents a pound for new steel."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Drops around here are $.80-$1/lb.  New steel I can get down to $.60 if I buy enough.
Reply:I think I buy hot rolled around 70 cents and cold rolled about $1.50. Its somewhere around there, maybe a little more.
Reply:.50 cents a lb for mild steel, 2.50 a lb for stainless and alluminum. With about a %15 fluctuation up or down depending on season and demand.Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:I went to a scrap yard the other day near clymer pa and payed .20 cents a pound for a 3/8 inch steel plate im gonna use for a welding table. Called dlb metals in Punxsutawney today and the guy said "around $2 a foot for 2" sqare tubing 1/8" wall. Not sure how much that is weight wise but seemed like a pretty good deal compaired to some other steel yards i called before.Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450

Reply:$.12 a lb. is what scrap is going for here. Guy that sells it builds metal buildings, so his scrap bins have all sorts of scraps. He's been trashing a lot of large I beam lately. It's 3/8" thick. I cut it with a plasma cutter and I've got 3/8" stock. Also lots of red iron perlins and such.

Reply:Thanks, this has been helpful.  Yesterday I picked up a 4x4 sheet of 1/2 and 1/4 at $.20 a pound from a guy closing up a welding business.  He started at $.33.    My local metal supplier, great service, but known to be pricey in the area was $.70 a lb on same material.   I have another metal supplier with no service except loading and they are more like .50 a lb new steel.  So I feel like I got a decent deal, although I'll have to put in some elbow grease to remove some surface rust.  The prices shared helped me in figuring out where I wanted to be at.
Reply:.50 /lb for drops of steel cr and hr. .75/lb for Al drops in Albany NY.
Reply:I buy from the scrap yard at 15 cents a pound for steel, 70 cents a pound for stainless and aluminum and $1.20 a pound for number 1 copper and $2.30 a pound for "MCM copper" (like new 4ga and bigger single conductor THHN), $1 cents a pound for lead. They buy steel at about 7 cents a pound, buy stainless and aluminum for 50 cents a pound and buy copper for up to $1 a pound, 50 cents a pound for lead.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Just bought some 5x5 x1/4 tubing in 12 ft length for .45 per lb.  They handsome 8x8 x3/16 and 1/4 wall in galvy but didn't know what would be a reasonable price .   I thought the galvy  would make great post for building or gazebo .    Any body else buying galvy  and what price? Reply:Recycle yard where I shop is .28/lb for steel. Sad most of the places anymore limit what they will sell or don't sell at all. Also they seem to process the stuff brought in very quickly so it's the luck of the draw as to what they have when you show up.
Reply:The Galvy is around $1.60 per lb but  The square post have square bases welded on them with 4 bolt holds in the base for anchoring to concrete.  Found some Rey steel 10 @ 22 wf for .31.  Most of my sources will not let you on their yard any more.
Reply:Steel @ $.08lb  Aluminum @ $1lb Stainless if you can find it @ $.65lb
Reply:Ninja    Are you able to get any prices on Galvy?  Thanks

Reply:Ninja   Thanks for the reply.  I have a chance to buy some 8 x8 x 1/4  galyv for steel post or supports.   I thought they would be good since they are already finished and would resist rust.  They have  1 inch plate welded on bottom with 4 holes drilled and two 3 x3 x 1/4 angles with 4 holes on the top.  Since everything is finished in gavy  I thought they would out last me for a shed or cover or maybe just gate post at the farm.  Problem is they are 12 ft and 16 ft long.oh man if you can get that stuff cheap I would be all over it, If transporting maybe you can have the guys there cut it for you ?  Has to be really heavy stuff especially 8x8 , I wouldn't mind building a carport out of that stuff.
Reply:Just bought for 40 cents/pound.  I only got a potential 3/4" welding table top but he's got all types.Iuka, Mississippi.
Reply:One stick of 1-1/2 x 1/4 hot rolled for just under $19.  Looks like about 75 cents per pound.  Seems fair given I only bought 25 pounds, they can't break even if they were to sell for 5 cents over cost...Besides the place has great service too!If I only wanted 3', home depot had it for $9.
Reply:Sometimes we get stuff we really don't need but have other folks with farms that can use it and it hel
Reply:Helps spread the hauling cost.  Last stuff we got was only 16000 lb and we elected  to hire 18 wheeler to haul at 4 cents per lb.  Didn't want to make two trips and fool with DOT.  Worked out ok
Reply:This is the surplus price breakdown, a lot of the materials are 10' to full 24' length surplus not prime material, they also have a huge section of cut offs and smalls Attached Images
Reply:Check out the list they do, its pretty descriptive, this doesn't include 10' and under drops http://www.kleinsteel.com/media/uplo...s_list_roc.pdf
