I have a new project I'm doing that requires making a fake bank vault door. They requested that large round headed rivet look you see on the old bank doors. I was thinking of drilling holes in my "door" and plug welding on the rivet heads from behind. I was going to cut the threaded shaft off carriage bolts, but that would be a lot of work. Does anyone have a source for rivet heads for something like this? Thanks guys

Reply:hit up big flats rivet company http://www.bigflatsrivet.com/catalog.html you can get them in steel or brass and you will need to pickup a Bucking bar and receiver to install them using an air hammer. I have used them when putting 20's and 30's fords back together if you have any questions on how to buck rivets just give me a holler and I will be glad to help you out!Millermatic 30aMillermatic 210Miller thunderbolt 225 ac/dc/ccMiller HF15-1-wg tigLincoln ranger 10(honda powered)Cebora 175 mig Too damn many tools but oddly not enough......

Reply:The last link I posted has 3/8" shank rivets for about $6./lb., so $6-$7. a pound seems in the ballpark. I've seen carriage bolts for less than 20 cents each, but then you have to deal with the plating , a stamped logo and they are shallow headed."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:This guy has a neat idea.  Use a 5/16 punch with a 9/16 die in an ironworker plate punch.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...onworker+punchWho is John Galt?
