I have been itching to do some scroll work for awhile now and finally had a job come threw today that called for some. I did these by hand, just clamped the bar to a pipe and went to town. This is my first ever scroll work so go easy on me.I am interested in seeing peoples tools for doing scrolls. I know it has been talked about here before. I am also interested if it is common practiced to weld the edges or drill and plug weld scrolls?
Reply:That looks like really nice work! Good job. Ive seen it done both ways. -DaveAll Custom Welding and Fabrication
Reply:I had a milk crate full of scroll jigs I made, and had at work. Someone stole it a few months back, and i'm still fuming  I know who did it, but can't prove it. Sorry no pics  Anyway enough about me, nice job! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Very nice work. I always want to mess with scroll work but never seem to find the time.
Reply:Not bad. The proportions are a bit off, but over all it looks quite nice. I forget the name for this but the proportions are usually based on that of a nautilus shell. Each next "block" is the two previous ones added together. 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8 and so on if you want to do it mathematically. also note each block is not square, but a rectangle. Most times it's just done by eye and some are better at it than others. When doing hot work, especially repeat work, many times they will do one very carefully as a jig and then use it to form all the other ones. I don't have the jig picts on this computer but here's an example of a few off Google Images. They weld the jig to a piece of angle iron so it can be held in the vise. Option 2 when doing hot work is to simply form it over the anvil by eye, tweaking as needed with a bending fork or scrolling pliers.Option 2 is to do them cold. They sell scroll jigs for benders like the Shop Outfitters bender and the HF knock offs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Oh I forgot to comment on the connections. I've seen them edge welded quite frequently. I've also seen them done with plug welds so the welds don't show as much. Another option is usually to do the connections with hot rivets. That adds another item of interest to the project and would be the "traditional" way these were joined, along with bent collars. Last would be bent collars where they wrap the two scrolls with a band of metal. that usually takes a lot more work than rivets, especially if you really want the corners to be nice and sharp..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You can buy scrolls from King and cut the big end and the little end off and make scrolls by bending around the little end first and then moving to the big end to finish the bend. Just remember thant your scroll will be a little bigger than the King one.

Reply:Your scrolls look good.  The  start has a nice curve.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...out&highlight=Used it last week to form a pattern for 20 smaller scrolls.
Reply:Thats great stuff!  Yeah I tried to make sure the start of the scrolls were fairly nice and weren't flat for 1/2" or more.
Reply:Nice welding and I like your design - simple and flows really well Here's a couple ideas for you from a window protector I did a few years ago.I hot wrapped with 1/4" rod (if memory serves) and then the thinner ones are just wire.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:That is very nice Dave! Love the wraps on it!If it isn't apparent the thing I made is for hanging a sign. The whole deal is 45" from wall mount to tip. My buddy owns a sign business and just needed a scroll hanger cheap. Hope after we get it out there more people will ask for them and hopefully people start asking for nicer ones for more money.
Reply:Best wishes on getting more business - making the product so they can see it should help.Overall, people don't know they want it until they see yours  Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
