I'm trying to self-teach metalworking (as a hobby), so I'm trying to find a good deal on a high quality plasma cutter. Any recommendations?A friend pointed me to a site with ridiculously cheap plasma cutters ($400 for a 40A), but I'm not sure if it won't fall apart or break when I use it, so I'm looking for advice
Reply:The Cheap PC's are a crap shoot in reliability- Lot of DOA but some have had good success with them. Not much help but there ya have it Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Can't you exchange the DOA if you get the warranty?
Reply:Maybe, but not all dealers in Chinese equipment have decent customer service.Personally, I would look at Cragislist, and get an older American machine. The inverters sure are small and light, but without the engineering and warranty of a "real" manufacturer, I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole. Older transformer machines are almost impossible to kill.My Matco 20/40 ran me $250 (although I must admit, that the machine has Italian origins, and is identical to the same model from Snap On), and the replacement consumables are dirt cheap. So what that its 15 or more years old. Its still got way more life left than a Chinese inverter.
Reply:Oh ok, thanks

Reply:If an inexpensive Chinese import is not what you are looking for then GO WITH THE BEST... Hypertherm, they are not only the best but they are my neighbors Keep a close watch on EBay, I saw a Hypertherm Powermax30 BRAND NEW go for $810 a couple of weeks ago....... http://cgi.ebay.com/NIB-Hypertherm-P...d=p3286.c0.m14 Last year I personally test drove one at the factory and it cut as good if not better than any Chinese Cut40. If you are going to be using a plasma cutter to teach others with then by all means get a top of the line machine with the superior torch .http://www.PlasmaMetalCutter.comGiantTech Cut40DGiantTech Cut50DGiantTech CT520DGiantTech Tig200sGiantTech Arc200GiantTech Tig200PACDCMiller MM210No Brand Chinese Chop SawNo Brand Chinese 4" Angle Grinder

I wanted a plasma cutter but could not affoard the big blue. So I purchased a three function machine from Longevity, stick, TIG, Plasma The first machine did not work the way that I though it should, and it was replaced with in 3 days.
