I want to do this on my rock crawling rig for the compact packaging.Currently there are some bodged together headers of dubious quality that are prone to leaks.I have two left hand LQ9 truck manifolds that I want to use to put a cross over the front exhaust on the LS1.I don't want to use the three stud socket setup and would much rather use v-band clamps for the good seal, no gaskets and ease of disassembly.So... Stainless to cast?  Stainless or mild steel V band clamp instead? Preheat?  Mig Tig?  What wire or filler material?  (Have a miller econotig that I'm learning to use and a Lincoln Mig that I'm more familiar with)Here's a thread on another forum I was getting some ideas from:http://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-ind...manifolds.htmlThanks in advance!TLast edited by thordehr; 02-09-2015 at 04:36 PM.
Reply:312 ss tig rod...go an inch at a time...let cool..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Preheat?  I can get it to 300 easily in the gas barbecue.  Slow cool?  Sand, welding blanket?

Reply:Personally, i would just weld up a bolt on adapter.
Reply:Good info, thanks
Reply:from cheapest-to-most expensive:  ER312, Harris Supermissle Weld, Hastelloy-W (ERNiMo-3).  Not the only choices, but they are readily-available.  Pre-heat and slow-cool down if it is cast iron, due to the high carbon content.  Cast steel won't need the same level of care, but it won't hurt either.  Disclaimer:  haven't done this myself, only re-iterating what I've read here and there over the years. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! HTP Invertig 400HTP Invertig 221HTP ProPulse 300HTP ProPulse 200 x2HTP ProPulse 220MTSHTP Inverarc 200TLP HTP Microcut 875SC
Reply:I have been asked to do it before. I decline. Lots of heat cycling in the turbo and normally quite a bit of weight hanging off the downpipe which is fatigued any time the engine is running. Recipe for cracks and broken off v-band.I have done the bolt on adapters many times. Thats the way I like to do it.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Just do it, you can always get another set of manifolds.

Reply:Yea, no turbo for me.  Just transitioning from manifold to the exhaust so no huge stresses on it.Another forum threw this into the mix :  http://weldit.com/products/brutus-a/Knock the coating off and use it as filler.  Apparently it's pretty great. Also found out the stock manifolds are cast Steel not cast Iron.  Even better!
Reply:Good luck with it. Keep us posted on how it goes and holds up. We like pictures!12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Originally Posted by roadkillbobb312 is somewhat crack resistant( it has a little more stretch in it) preheat is better than none, go slow , clean everything, nothing ventured nothing gained, if it fails, grind it off and try again..and learn by what doesnt work....im just a hobbyist as you...got more time to play with stuff and see what works or doesnt....disclaimer.. as long as life or limb are not at stake..
