Um, help? CGA540 fitting on Acetylene bottle.

I got an acetylene bottle in a trade and just took the safety cap off.  It has a cga540 fitting on it.  What's that all about?ETA, it's 100-140cf size bottle.Last edited by hazmat5760; 08-12-2013 at 09:56 PM.
Reply:Well it's not acetylene if you are correct.Are you just "guessing" or are you reading the CGA number right off the valve itself? Acetylene in larger cylinders are typically CGA 510 or CGA 300. The 510's having male threads on the cylinder, the 300 having female threads IIRC..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I was just guessing as it's dark out and I forgot to take a light.  I'll go back and look.  I was guessing 540 as a junk o2 reg I have spun right on.  Tank has acetylene sticker on it.Guess I've never seen the 510 fitting before.

Reply:CGA 510 is the same fitting that is typically found on Propane cylinders. You also find them on some industrial Acetylene cylinders.It's always possible someone simply stuck and acetylene sticker on a different cylinder for some reason. The only reason I can think of however would be to deceive someone who didn't know better. Good news is that it may not matter to the gas supplier if you want to exchange it other than you may pay a bit more if the test date is out. My supplier has no issues swapping out small sized owner cylinders for a different gas of similar size. Larger cylinders that are rentals are a bit different, but my guy will work with me on those..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Yea, my local Matheson is great with that. I traded an o2 tank for a c25 tank no problems.This one has all the characteristics of all the other acet tanks I've seen/have, just the valve was different than I'm used to.  I'm trying to sell it as I don't really need this plus the size 5 cylinder as well.
