First off want to thank everyone on here for helping me with the purchase of my welder.  Everyones ideas and input made a difference.  Now another question???  Want to buy a compressor for my garage, going to get my air tools too.  Saber, grinder all the fun stuff.  There are alot of ones out there and just need to find the right direction to go?  Company, size, pharse, rotary?  Thanks again for everyones time.LIVE BETTER WORK UNION! Reply:Pick a pump that provides ALOT of air flow (cfm) at working pressure (usually 90-125 psi).   Minimum 10cfm to 25cfm is good.   Less than 10 and forget about running high-demand tools.Tank size is not all that important as long as the pump is capable of supplying enough air. A cast iron oil lubed reciprocating pump will last a long time and give reliable, quiet service.   Stay away from oil-less rotary pumps.  You'll need to know if you have single phase or 3-phase power available to you, and how many amps of service you have and at what voltage.  If you're running from your garage, most likely you have 240 volt single phase power and anywhere from 30 to 100 amps available.  Check your breakers.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:quincy, ingersol rand, chicago pnumatic, and sulair are all good brands to consider. If you can afford it go for the rotary screw with a minumum of an 80 gallon tank. Minuum of 15 cfm. About 125psi is all you should need.  If yu get a compressor with more psi you will need a good regulator to prvent tool damage. If you get a reciprcating compressor make sure it is a two stage pump.
Reply:I love this site, u guys know everything.  I was waiting for desertrider33 to help out.  Those quincy compressors are bada*ss.  Thanks for the info again fellas.LIVE BETTER WORK UNION! BUY AMERICAN!

Reply:Don't consider any "oil free or oiless" compressors, they are prone to failure unless you use them only occasionally.  Make sure to buy the capacity you need and with an oil sump.  Figure out whether you need 10? or 20 CFM at 100 psi....or maybe 10 to 15 CFM at 150PSI.  Big difference in what you buy.  It's all about recovery time on a compressor so figure out your demand on it first.  A lot of these compressors these days sell you a huge tank, with small compressor hoping I guess that will get you through an occasional demand for volume.  I personally like a 5HP two stage since I need pressures up to 140 often.  If your needs are more in the typical 100 to 120 range then a single stage, two cylinder with high CFM capacity will do nicely. Some air tools require lots of CFM like die grinders, painters, sandblasters; others like ratchets, nail guns don't need so much  CFM so check over what your needs are and size the unit accordingly. Nothing better than a great compressor...nothing worse than one that's too small....jbman45Century 230A AC/DCLongevity 200 Multifunction MofsetLongevity 200PI Multifunction IGBTVictor Oxy/Weld&Cut5HP 2 stage compressorTractor; tools and 40  years of collecting fine tools.
Reply:I will warn you don't get cheep like i did and buy a single stage.  I bought a single stage IR after my old trusty shat the bed.    Well its now seeping oil from the headgasket area after less than a year.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:If you have auctions in your area, hit them.Old, and I mean Old, oil bath compressors, no matter whether single or two stage, are the best and most reliable.  The very old motors are also just about indestructable.  And most of the old ones could be dual wired, either 110 or 220.I don't believe the older compressors had "duty cycles", mine runs for hours when I paint, and no ill effects. If you buy at auction from a farm, or business..........look at how the rest of the equipment for sale has been maintained.  It'll give you a clue as to whether the compressor has also been well treated.look for the Ugly Duckling machine.  Even better, look for one that you're pretty sure has been shop built.  Usually a better compressor block, and a better motor.  Name brands usually bring better money, and sometimes aren't as good as a well built "shop built" compressor.Big, Old, and Bulky generally outperforms new sleek and shiny."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Oh yeah, oil free compressors generally run on a cheap nylon bearingAnd the new oil bath cheap compressors suck too.  High rpm, low displacement.  Makes a lot of noise, and don't make much air"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
