6010 downhill hotpass, what do you think?

Reply:For sure man. I'm used to welding 12" pipe really hot and really fast with larger diameter rods. For some reason this smaller pipe and smaller diameter rods are hard to get used to. It's just a matter of adjusting though. UA Local 250
Reply:I think on a pipeline, they would have used a 5/32" rod, maybe even 3/16". My former neighbor was a really good pipe welder and I was watching him try to set up his new diesel Lincoln Classic. He liked his 57 short hood better but sold it for $5500! He ran real hot but his bead widened out more dragging it straight down on a flat plate. I think you might be a little too fast or need a slight weave so you don't get slag inclusions on the edges. A 5/32" rod would probably wash out to the sides more. The machine you use can make a big difference too on downhand pipe welding.
Reply:Yeah, 5/32 root and hot pass and 3/16 filler and cap (6010 or 8010). That's how I weld out 12"UA Local 250
