Welding without gloves... ?

The other day I was in the garage doing a repair on a snowblower...  A quick mig job ...    I got everything clean and setup ...  then zapped it quick and it was done...my buddy was watching and said I'm gonna get skin cancer from welding with no gloves... 90% of the time, I DO wear gloves...   but he got me thinking....      what exactly is the danger?  intense light.. ? anyway,  I guess I'll wear my gloves more....   just because it's on my mind now...    But just curious your thoughts. Reply:The light from welding is best avoided, high in UV.Even if you don't get skin cancer it speeds up the aging of your skin,thinning,wrinkling, brown spots, the whole mess.

Reply:There is a guy at work who refuses to wear anything but a mask 90% of the time. I don't understand the thought process behind not wearing the proper gear. It takes like 10 seconds to put on a jacket and 2 seconds to put on a pair of gloves.

Reply:It's UV light. Bad. It won't melt your skin on sight, but it's still not good.The way I see it, there's so many times that I can't avoid UV light, I may as well cover up whenever possible.IW Local 580 NY, NY

Reply:Years ago I had a job where I used a carbon arc cutting torch several hours a day.  I developed a patch on my forearm that got worse every day and hurt like hell.  Finally figured out I had a hole in the sleeve of my work shirt and I was getting an arc burn.  I try to not have any exposed skin now when I weld.

Reply:Just saw the Mythbusters Asian welder guy going gloved with a short sleeve tshirt. Gotta be okay right? One of my fondest memories is burning about 25 lbs of 1/8" in a 980 bucket in a tank top. Learned my **** there. Ppe is just good. In the shop, full leathers, leather pants if applicable and a fume extractor. Hell,  I sometimes use the respirator depending on how I'm positioned. Black boogers suck too. Reply:Glove up and keep the cancer and burns at bay. As welders we get burns even when we are covered.

Reply:Probably watching one of TV shows where they never wear gloves. Sometimes TIG welders don't wear gloves on thinner material or for feeding the rod. If you've ever had to weld in a tight spot with just cutting goggles and a darker lens, you know how your face shrinks and tightens up with the bad sun burn. Why do you think your hands wouldn't be affected the same way?
Reply:Gloves always... I can do most pain, but sunburn/arc burn just makes me want to kill things...
Reply:One day I realized I know what cooking human flesh smells like, and it's not at all like what I would have expected. You know how your hand smells after welding with no gloves? that surprisingly distinct smell that's still there after you wash your hands, THAT's what cooking human flesh smells like. Reply:At the bare minimum I wear short gauntlet type leather work gloves when Migging small Fab projects. Work expects us to wear "hand protection", soon to be mandated soon as the larger companies are doing that. Besides your hands wash up easier that way!
Reply:Feeding wire sure is easier without gloves but after getting a couple of bad arc burns years ago I don't even think about not wearing protective clothing B4 lighting up.
