Here is a short vid of the Kaltenbach I operate at the shop I work at.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b59t0HH6G-4[/ame]I sit at a computer screen and watch the numbers and make sure the machine is doing its thing correctly
Reply:This one is of the Bandsaw. Part of the same machine just the other side.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjn1w-7eW2s&feature=channel[/ame]The hissing sound you hear is actualy the cooling system for the blade. Compressed air mixed with oil to lubricate and cool the blade, no water or mess! The saw can be used in auto mode with the drill line but at the time of the making of this video the auto saw function wasn't working, turns out we had a computer card that went bad. It has since been fixed. The saw can be programed to cut bevels up to 46.5 +/- degreesLast edited by katana1150; 10-13-2009 at 03:22 AM.
Reply:It makes one think... I can remember 12 guys keeping one welder with wire feed busy. All we did was cut, punch, drill and tack for that one guy. Now "we" are going the way of the dodo. Good thing I am retiring. I imagine there will still be some custom, one off fabrications but they will be more rare.

Reply:Don't sell this technology short... In many cases it requires a much more qualified person to program and maintain the equipment. You just don't need as many people. Increase accuracy of holes and locations will produce more complex, stronger, lighter and cheaper structures.
Reply:Like Lotechman said: we are doing a job for Disney Imagineering, 500 beams with approx 20 holes per beam. specs are +/- 1mm. This machine is accrate to within 0.05m X axis and 0.005 Z and W axis. And with a tight timeline to boot......Would never in a million years be able to keep tolerances like this drilling by hand. And 10 times faster than drilling by hand
Reply:What happens if you break a drill bit?
Reply:Lol, show off.My current shop still uses all equipment from the 50s/60s.all manual lathes/drill presses, everything.Even some of our welders (the machines, not the weldors) are from that era as well.
