Sometimes when welding titanium I get an annoying red halo around the arc. I am using ultra pure argon and don't have any issues with the welds, but the red halo makes it difficult to see the puddle at times. Has anyone else experienced this?
Reply:Tell us more about your parameters, situation, material etc. Ti is much more particular than any other material. Like Stainless it needs to be back purged and needs to have shielding till it cools but it is even more vital with Ti than SS. The one time I welded Ti was just to prove I could. I made my own purge box using a clear vinyl shower curtain and vinyl glue. I purged it with Argon till I could strike an arc on a piece of SS and cut arc and gas with no discoloration. At that point I started welding on the Ti and didn't notice any unusual halo or anything like that. It was definitely a little more challenging welding through a shower curtain but I got nice shiny welds in the end. If you don't have proper shielding your welds will have no strength.Lincoln precision TIG 275Millermatic 140 MIG
