I'm pre-heating the metal and bring the flux coated brass rod into the flame so it'll melt and deposit a ball of brass. All the sudden as soon as the brass rod starts to melt I get this POP from the torch flame, blowing the molten brass out all over me and the flame snuffs out. What am I doing wrong?Ronnie LyonsMeridian, Idaho
Reply:Things are getting too hot. A dangerous condition exists in all likelihood.
Reply:Like soldering, I think you want the base metal, not the flame (iron) to melt the rod; that "ball of brass" means your base metal is too coldXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Boost up the flame size, or drop a tip size. You are overheating the tip and doing either of the following will increase gas flow and reduce tip temperature. Basic flame setting of a torch tip is a bushy soot free acetylene only feather that is still attached to the tip, then bring in the oxygen to neutral. For brazing go to slightly oxidizing to tin the parts, then neutral to build up a fillet.
Reply:If the flame gets too close to the work, it will pop. Keep an 1/8" air gap between the tip of the flame cone and the work, and keep it moving. City of L.A. Reply:Sounds like torch tip is getting too hot.Unless base metal is WAY too hot. When base metal is overheated, filler will boil, making sort of aa sizzing /popping sound.sound.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:... what the the others have said.....  Sounds like you have 'backfire'   See this video:  http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p...81&postcount=8    The Backfire explanation starts about 1:12 in the vid.
Reply:gas pressures may be too low. Check your owner's manual. If its not that, then your flame is too small, or your tip is too small. The material is too hot.Miller Multimatic 255
