I have some 1" thick x 4" wide steel flat bar laying around and would like to try some vertical uphill welds. The coupon can only be 4" tall because I can cut the bevel in my bandsaw. What are the specifications that would be seen on a test for something of that thickness? (Single bevel/compound bevel, bevel angle, # of passes) I will try some with 7018's and some with my 12vs running Lincoln Superarc L56 .035" with 75/25. I know that wire is probably too small for a real test but it should give me some practice. Any advice as far as technique would be appreciated.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:This might be what you are looking for...  I'm pretty sure this is for AWS D1.1.  Note in that pict the have the backing bar ending right at the edge of the weld plates. In many cases they allow you to extend the backing strips past the ends and use them as run on run off plates. 6" is the usual size so there is enough clean material to cut out your test strips for bend tests. Thanks to CEP for the original pict..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. What do they mean by unlimited thickness? I'm sure some really thick stuff the procedure would be different and you would have to be recertified.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:If you can pass it you are "qualified" to weld on any thickness of metal with that particular process. I assume the procedure would be the same, the only differences would be the direction you stack your beads in... Though I've never done plate thicker than 1/2" and I am not D1.1 certified. Could be wrong.

Reply:I ran a practice coupon today and I would have failed. I cut the plate in half and had one pinhole in the middle about .020" in diameter. The crown of the weld was off center which I'm assuming was due to the gun being pointed to one side. Finally the edges of the top of the weld looked like a tig weld made with no filler. Reply:Personally I wouldn't run .035 wire on 1-inch thick material. I would run 1/16-inch wire.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Most of the time is flux core or dual shield used for structural? The next coupon I will try is the same size but with some 1/8" or 5/32" 7018. The one book I have says 7 passes of 5/32" 7018 for 1" material does that sound right?I'm probably being too critical for only practicing but I like to base my practice on what is seen in real world situations.Last edited by Chris T.; 09-03-2013 at 01:48 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Most structural shops will run dual shield wire. Outside construction for structural is self shielded flux core wire. If you think you'll be using a T-8 wires. NR-232, NR-233, and Coreshield 8 are very popular. If you can get by with T-11 wires Hobart's Fabshield 21-B is a good general purpose fab wire. I never gave it much thought how many passes to run, I weld until the weld is to size, or the joint is full.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
