Have a tractor with fender rust and a friend gave me the idea of cutting the rust patches out and welding in ammo cans.  Would get rid of the rust holes and create toolboxes.  For equipment I only have a stick welder.  Would it work, particularly if I go with 1/16" rods?  Any particular recommendation for the rod type?

Reply:Take some 18"x18" slabs of 16 ga sheet and weld them directly to the top of the fenders.Or bolt into solid metal. Then cut your holes for your toolboxes.JmoJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:Should work fine, just take the ammo out first.
Reply:ammo cans are kind of heavy gauge. not sure you need to go with a 1/16th rod. I would get some 3/32 6013, and run them DCEN.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:The ammo can isn't going to the problem child, that rusty fender material is ..."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Skin it and build some pockets for the ammo cans.  It is nice to be able to remove the cans and carry to the job.   Or you could build a pocket for a cooler...
