Welding hardware cloth

My children wanted to keep a large wolf spider, or maybe it is a trapdoor spider, as a pet.I dug an old 20 gallon aquarium out of the storage building and quickly fabricated a lid for it.I had a very hard time with the hardware cloth.  With the amps too high it quickly burned through.  With the amps low enough to not vaporize the hardware cloth, it would not heat up the 0.25 in flat stock enough to stick good.It really looks crappy, but here are the pictures of the underside.Should I have used gorilla glue instead?
Reply:Gorilla glue may have worked. Looks like it will do its intended job.As for me it would have been held captive with a size 11 Redwing. HAHA
Reply:you can grind it down some. I think that you would have had better luck using thinner material for the frame.

Reply:I think desertrider has the right idea. You could drill some holes in the strips and plug weld it. It would make the spider really love you and that is what it would take before I would get my hand near that ugly varmit. What do you feed that thing anyway ?
Reply:PS the cage looks good and I don't think the spider can break out of that one. I bet you had to build a good one like that before your wife would let you bring it in the house - Right

Reply:sunline,  not only do they live near me, this one was found inside my house.  My wife went downstairs to the storeroom where we have an extra refrigerator to bring up some bottled water,  a few minutes later I heard her calling my name loudly.  This spider was standing in the middle of the doorway of the storage room and my wife was on top of our chest freezer.  We live in rural central Mississippi.
Reply:I believe the Chinese consider spiders to be good fortune omens. I have many in my basement as well but non that large. Reply:did you not think of cold welding ?? as in JB Weld etc??  I use it for a lot of different things and find it very handy for odd projects like this,, of course as an experiment in welding I would say your attempt was quite interesting!!

Reply:Spiders are creepy.  They are fun to watch though.  I just tacked some hardware cloth to my stove as a spark arrester.  I used a hot enough setting to melt into the base metal. I held the gun just far away from the wire cloth to not vaporize it and let the puddle melt into the wire.  It's still difficult though.
