My new pancake came in the mail today, love that sucker. Still need to do some pruneing on the box to fit my head, I see why people rave about them. Burned some 5p+ for the root and some 1/4 inch 6013s just because I had some laying around. Making a winch cradleSent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk Attached Images

Reply:Ah I see now. They are more goggles than a lid.
Reply:There was no information in the two adds to say why anyone would want a flat faced hood. But it did mention that there was some balsa wood involved.  So I am going to say that maybe these flat hoods are used because they weigh practically nothing.  this would be a benefit if you were sitting at a bench and welding all day long.   Mac
Reply:Pancake hoods are from the pipeline world. We use em as stated because there isn't any glare they are light weight. And the fact that they get good air flow around your Mellon is a plus.Once you use one and see how clear and crisp the weld looks without any glare you will be hooked on one.
Reply:I had the chance to try one out while in welding school. They are lighter, but I would say the main advantage is that they block out the ambient light around you. The idea is to have the shield on the side that you will have facing the pipe (assuming that you are using it for welding pipe) and the other ear is protected by your welding cap.
Reply:The shield over your ear is another plus, running 6010 around a piece of pipe you will get a sizzling berry in the ear......Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I've been using them for a lot of years now. My old Speedglas is collecting dust in the truck...
Reply:when you're working in close proximity to other welders, (brother in law, ect) pancakes are nice, keeps their arc light out of your eyes, keeps their grinding sparks and brush slag out of your eyes too. And I dont tend to fog them up as easily. because your mouth and nose are outside of the lens box. The downside, is some contractors require safety glasses at all times, i know this was an issue with certain factions of enbridge. Welders had to get creative....Local 597
Reply:Wendy's has some with a flip front. I made my own out of a Sarge's and parts.
Reply:I am glad to see I ant the only Indiana Yankee that owns a pancake. You will find out that just about any one you come across in our area will think it is some home made go to hell hood.  I get people asking me about it all the time. I put a auto lens in mine

Reply:Looks good! Now I want to build one of my own.... The 'no glare from behind' is the most appealing to me. Might be good for my Dad as well. He is always complaining that the reason he doesn't like to weld anymore is that he can't see the bead. Anyone else notice a difference?"The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson If the Lights are a Flashin', STAY OFF the tracks!!! It might be me at the Throttle...
Reply:I always figured they will fog up when it's cold out. But I think they're cool looking. I'd have to make mine a smiley face though."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"They don't fog up to bad because your not breathing into the box around your purty lil eyes. My regular hood fogs up a lot worse. I have seen a few with a hole in them so you can smoke a cig while welding...... User modified of course.

Reply:I can see what your saying. I haven't had that problem. Might have to get myself to a colder area for some research. Would be a nice change for a bit. Guess you could put yet head closer to the fire of the arc to defrost it.
Reply:Do they flip up like regular hoods? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Reply:Think of them more like burning goggles with a face shield to protect your face. Some are made with flip lens though. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:My brother asked me if I needed any welding gear for a Christmas gift during Thanksgiving. We pulled up wendys on the computer and he's gonna get me one. Finally a descent gift! Yahooooo! I worked up on bridges for years welding with the sun always behind me, these hoods would have been a major help if I knew back then. It would be 100 degrees and I would wear a sweatshirt with a hood that I would pull up over my shield to keep the sun out. It was murder. The inside of my hood looked like it had dried up saltwater in it everyday from sweating. I would swear if anybody believes me that it is possible to sweat out of your eyeballs!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Remember Mike when you get your pancake, you'll have to whittle / sand down the goggles to fit your face. If you ever have to wear a hard hat wonder how hard it would be to adapt one of these to fit a pancake? Reply:I had to put my pancake away when I started wearing glasses. For welding I just use dollar store reading glasses, so they don't fit inside the goggles of my pancake. And I can't stand cheater lenses, the line down the center drives me crazy! I guess I could get a set of the really small modern glasses, but I don't weld enough anymore that it's a big deal for me.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
