I have a friend that's interested in one of the small sets (20 cu ft oxy/10 cu ft acet - like HF sells) to use for cutting steel. I know absolutely nothing about them so I thought I'd ask here. I'm thinking he won't be able to cut longer than about 10 minutes and it'll cost him maybe $40 to fill both tanks. $40 for 10 min of cutting. Does that sound about right?
Reply:local gas prices vary..that set was designed for a fireman..to make 1cut..too small for a hobbiest, you'll be at the lws all the time,,and be limited to the smallest tip (1/10 rule)
Reply:something like that. And you can search the forums, this has been discussed to death. But in a nutshell, the small tanks cost a lot more to fill, and limit the usefulness of the torch. You really can't weld much with one of these because the size of the tank limits the flow rate of the gas.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:As mentioned, this has been discussed frequently. If he really wants a set look for it on Craig's craigs list. This is another example that people buy the baby sets and find out there empty almost after lighting the torch. I have seen used sets with tanks for a $100 to $150. Larger tanks like a 125 size will cost just a little more to fill. My 125 oxygen was $24 and the 250 oxygen was $ 29.
Reply:Thanks everyone. I'll tell him it's a bad idea. Kind of what I thought.
Reply:Those little sets have their uses, but they are very limited. They are great for the car guy who occasionally needs to heat or cut a bolt or two, but someone looking to do metal fab would be better off with a bigger set. Next step up in size, isn't bad for the guy who wants to do light OA welding and solder/brazing, especially with one of the small aircrafter or jewelry torch kits. That's still really too small for general fab work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The small sets are a bad deal. You can buy an adapter to use larger tanks.Major companies sell them.they supply a large tip that will drain the tanks fast. They compare to a 90 amp wire welder with an AC output.I  talked with a fellow doing repairs on a super market cooler. He had one that looked well used.Said it was ok for brazing.I was advised to convert to propane. You can use a 20 pound  propane grill tank.Buy a large oxygen tank and you will have a useful outfit.Buy a new propane tank and have it filled.Rental fees add up if you have limited use for an oxy/acet outfit.
Reply:A few years ago I bought a set of bottles like that, came in a hand tote. Only use it gets is cutting axles off trucks at the dump, or sweating copper line at -40.
