Just to let y'all know that mass production is still alive and well here in the good ol' USAHad to make 50 of these today for the latest projectPic One............BlanksPic Two..........Finished Hinge thingy'sPic Three.............The most modern heating equipment available in the Western World  Kerosene fumes are a killerPic Four...........Fifty cuts on one end mill made possible by flood coolant.  1/2" hogging mill running at 700rpmPic Five.........Closeup of the HIGH TECH PART  A discussion of the milling process, and problems later this evening(rushing to get this up before sundown, have to feed the gals) Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Handy dandy way to handle chips without cutting your tender little fingersMove 'em from one pile to the other pile Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Beautiful as always Sam.....Those slots need one more pass to clean up that radius all the way though !!! I love the magnet trick too.....I learned that one for cleaning the cold saw from the guy that used to run the bending department at Sway Away......He would put a magnet in a plastic  folder  for the job traveler ( and pick up chips with them and then over the trash would take the magnet  out of the folder and bam all the chips fall right in the trash. Poor mans electro magnet.
Reply:Now a real fast discussion about climb vs. conventional milling for those who never heard of it.The slots were plunge cut with a 1/2" mill.  The second that the drilling was over, and the piece was slotted from right to left, the mill was forced out of true with the line of cut.Rotating clockwise, the mill was cutting conventionally on the bottom of the pic (I reversed the pic to show it right).  The cutting edge was rotating upwards from the material. On the top of the pic, the mill was climb milling, moving upwards thru the material while cutting. The force of climb milling is tremendous, and forces the mill in the opposite direction.  It is possible to cut this way on a very heavy built ridgid machine, which mine isn't.Reversing table travel at the end of the cut would clean up the piece to some extent, but the slot wouldn't be a true 1/2" slot, which isn't important here anywayTo make a true slot with my machine would require a smaller mill conventionally milling on both sides of the cut to bring it to true 1/2".  Two passesFast simple slotting can be done like I did it, but the accuracy suffers. We at Uranis Products Inc. strive to drive costs down Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Not a great explanationLet's do this with a pic Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:http://techtv.mit.edu/videos/183-machine-shop-7  about 40 minutes into the video, there will be an indepth explaination of conventional vs. climbingor go here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milling..._climb_millingLast edited by oxy moron; 12-16-2009 at 12:07 AM.
